"Band-aid" fix for leaking CV boot?

3" lift, my passenger side outer cv boot has rubbed a small hole and is now leaking grease. I'm short on cash/time at the moment and was thinking about trying to seal up the hole and make it last a little while longer until i have the time to install a new axle.

I was gonna do the cv boot slide mod while I'm at it, and then attempt to repack the boot with grease and then use some heavy duty sealant to seal the hole. Any issues i might run into by doing this? Most importantly, is there a special kind of grease that goes into the boot for these axles?

Interesting....Well, if you give it a try with that product, let me know how it works out. I'll report back with how well the Shoe Goo fix lasts.

 

Did the work last night, drove to work this morning (~20miles). So far so good

i did this but the leak came back. Another method is to buy a bicycle inner tube and cut it flat to wrap around the boot, then use zip ties to keep it in place between the fins. definitely go and get re booted when you have the chance. I now keep extra inner tube rubber and zip ties in my truck for an on-the-trail quick temporary fix. you should be able to get 2-3 patches out of one inner tube.

 

In a pinch, I have used electrical tape. A whole roll, round and round from end to end.

You can just buy a whole new cv axle for $40-$60 and do it yourself. (Cheaper and easier then dealing with grease) I did mine last week. Never did it before and was pretty easy. I have some pics on my build. (Last few pages)

 

I know, I've done it before, twice actually. Im strapped for cash and have other things to pay for at the moment (in the middle of moving/relocating/starting new job). Dust should settle in a few wks. Just needed a quick fix to get me thru the next month or so

 

Oh ok. I didn't see the part that you'll be installing a new axle when you have the money.
