    Hi All,

Sorry if this is an obvious question but i'm relatively new to lighting/wiring. I'm planning on buying an upTOP roof rack and intend to mount a Baja Designs 40'' OnX6 Dual Control Amber/White light bar onto it.

My question: the harness for this light bar is sold separately, however Baja Designs offers several harnesses and I can't determine with 100% certainty which one is correct for this particular bar/size. I have a hunch but want to confirm from someone who's running this light bar.

    Light Bar:
    https://www.bajadesigns.com/products/OnX6-Dual-Control-Amber-White-LED-Light-Bar.asp

What I believe to be the right harness:
    https://www.bajadesigns.com/products/xl-pro-sport-wire-harness-w-mode-2-lights-max-325-watts.asp

Also, assuming that is the correct harness, what is the ideal way to mount/install those switches in the cab? I envisioned a more traditional switch but the images seem to indicate that it comes with a different setup via the harness.

Option 3: Save your money and just make your own harness.

At this point i'm more interested in spending the money and gaining the piece of mind than teaching myself how to rig this up safely...

You don't know how long the harness is going to be, so it might not even reach the correct location you want it to.
The UpTop harness has wiring for the scene lights already attached, so unless you are running that too, I wouldn't get it.
Learning how to rig it up safely is actually much easier than you would think. I can help you with that if you want.
Edit: Making your own harness allows you to clean it up any way you want as well.

If you want to go through Baja completely you have the correct part numbers.

You'll essentially have 3 switches when it's all said and done... On/Off, Inner/Outer Light Control, and Hi/Low functionality.

And shameless plug here, but if you haven't purchased the Baja parts yet I can hook you up... :spy:

I relooked through their options, and I think since it is the dual control that harness you linked wouldnt work. That one is meant to turn on and dim a single control light. I tried to look up the install instructions for the dual control, but couldn't find it. I think it would be more along the lines on 2 separate on/off wiring harnesses for the whites and the ambers.

Seriously though, as long as you use the right gauge wire, you can learn how to do this on youtube in an evening. Weatherpack connectors are super easy and safer than butt splices. And you can custom tailor the wire length to the application.

I've been discussing with Micah from upTOP and he offered to incorporate the OnX6 harness into the Alpha Rack quickWIRE system if I shipped the parts to him. For this reason I wanted to keep it simple and order them all directly from Baja Designs so i could get them to him easily. Otherwise, i may have been more interested in building the harness myself.

Ah, makes sense. @memario1214 that's in here already is a BD dealer as well, and super helpful. He just got me a set of S1s last week at a good price.

This is really helpful guidance. Three switches makes sense for this bar, thus I was confused by the specs on the harness I originally linked. As i said above, i'm trying to buy all the needed parts in one go so I can ship them to upTOP. Does Baja offer all the parts necessary to accomplish this (I assume they have to)? Can you refer me to them?

They do, and you have all of the parts necessary linked. Here's where it gets confusing, and were leveraging the knowledge of @CttAznRanger is not a bad idea for making a custom harness. Each Dual control OnX6 bar will come with 2 leads coming off of it. You would need 2 of the 640119 harnesses to get full functionality out of it. If money isn't the concern this is the most turn-key way to do it. What most do though is just eliminate the hi/low dongle and tuck it away because if I am turning a 40" bar on I likely have zero interest in running in "dim" mode...

I am going to steer away for a second here... What is your goal with the dual control light? I personally find it to be a gimmick because if you are mounting the light bar up high you likely don't want it on during very inclement conditions because you'll be glaring light down onto your hood and your sightline whether it is amber or not. I generally recommend that amber light is mounted low on the vehicle so that when it's needed it's positioned below your glare points.

Do you just want a blend of amber/white light on the roof rack and/or like the look of the amber/white up there? If so I would say just get a normal OnX6 bar and swap out a couple of the lenses for the desired pattern/look for significantly less cost and headache.

Just want to get your thoughts before we get lost down the rabbit trail here.

Your advice is very well taken. I really like the amber/white combination, especially in that configuration with amber for the wide driving and white for the spot. Did not realize that you could replace the lenses to create a more desired combination. Going with a normal OnX6 and replacing lenses sounds way easier than figuring out the right harness for the dual control. I originally thought that the added versatility of the dual control couldn't hurt, but in this particular scenario i'll go without.

Would it make sense to go with a normal OnX6, spot pattern in white, and pick up two of these to go on the far left and right ends?

Looking at the light bar, what sort of tool do you need to replace the lenses?

I say we're now on the right track

So since LEDs are victims of optics and dont generally have a ton of throw downrange I am going to recommend this lens. Lenses can be swapped with a small Allen wrench.

The spot pattern will still disperse at range since it is mounted so high.

If you want hi/low functionality you'll still want that 640119 harness. If you're good with just on/off for a 30" bar this one will suffice.

Only thing i'll press on: I don't think i'll plan on installing ditch lights. Would the wide driving lenses be a better choice than the driving/combo if i wanted the amber sides of the light bar to illuminate road more off to the side of the truck? Or would the driving/combo still do this decently well?

Well I will say that I have been happy with the distance provided by my white squad pros in the wide cornering pattern out into the ditch so you may be A-OK. Theres not a bit of harm in going with the lenses you want, and changing later if you feel like you dont like the color, pattern, etc!

It's a relatively cheap and easy swap.

Fair enough. Lenses are not a huge investment. Could you help me understand a bit better how the 640119 harness is going to work?
--What does the mode-2 functionality refer to? Hi/low functionality?
--It says it comes with two components: XL wire harness w/ mode-2 lights, and the OnX6 wiring harness splitter (adds one light). What is the purpose of the splitter if there's just one lead from the light bar?
--How would you mount/install the toggle switch/buttons in the cab?

Sorry I took a bit to get back here!
    • Yeah the second switch would be for hi/low functionality if you wanted it. Is that a function that you want?
    • The splitter would be trash
    • Mounting the switches in the cab is up to you, but some people drill out their switch blanks, and others get switches from like OTRATTW or CH4x4. Mounting them in the cab comes down entirely to where you would like them. The world is your oyster!

Seriously, save your $ and make your own harness. The onx6 harness I had was such a waste of wire and features. All you need is some weather packs crimps heat shrink wire loom and some basic electrical knowledge to make it work. And it will be clean AND they way you want it.

The 40'' OnX6+ says it outputs 346W on the high setting however the 640119 harness suggests a 325W max? Is this harness an okay long-term solution?
