Lately I’ve started to notice a loud rattling noise coming from my rear end, mostly when I am decelerating from 20mph - 10mph.
The noise doesn’t change whether I brake or cruise, if I am in different gears or neutral. It seems like there is a lot of vibration in the rear axle that may be causing this noise but the truck doesn’t drive any differently.
I had my friend lay in my truck bed and try to listen to it and he said it sounded like it was coming from the drier side rear.
Today I spent hours under my truck hammering everything with a mallet trying to reproduce the noise. I’ve checked all bolts and nuts to torque. Checked heat shields and exhaust. Changed out the rear diff fluid and didn’t find any metal in it.

Any ideas or suggestions will be extremely helpful!!

Just take it to the dealership? You said you check all your bolts. Maybe it’s the diff? Idk, sorry man Wish I had something more useful to contribute but definitely interested to see what the outcome is.

Have you crawled underneath the truck? Does the sound come and go when you're in or off the gas?

Personally it sounds like a loose exhaust heat shield or something of that nature, roll around under your truck and bump things with the side of your fist until something rattles

Edit: I didn't read the full post, sorry. Check for loose stuff in the bed storage cubbies or maybe on top of the spare?

Rock in your drum? (Yes, I know that sounds dumb.) I honestly have no idea.

I was thinking rock or something loose in the drum, probably centrifugal (or is it centripetal ?) force keeps it tight to the drum at speed, then rattles as you slow down. Notice anything different about breaking?

    Hmmm.

Sounds like a stripped pinion, but could be any number of other things.

Does the sound get worse, or go away, when you corner?
Does the sound get worse, or go away, on the gas?
Does the sound get worse, or go away, going up a hill?
Does the sound get worse, or go away, when you apply the brakes?
Does the sound get worse, or go away, in 4WD?
With the truck stationary, can you rock it back and forth and hear the sound?

A stripped pinion will put a lot of metal shards in your diff oil. It’s easy to change your diff oil. I would start there. See if the oil is clean. You don’t even need to fully drain it, just pop the plug and see if the magnet has collected debris (it is normal to have a metallic paste-like collection of particles on the magnet, but not a bunch of shards). Make sure you open the fill plug first (in case the fill plug is seized).

Sounds brake related imo. A spring popped loose and rubbing on the drum hat? It definitely changes w rotation. Pull some wheels off.

Changed my diff oil yesterday and didn’t find much metal in the oil or on the magnet.
The sound gets better or nonexistent when I am accelerating.
Gets worse when I am braking but it seems to only happen from 20-10mph.
If I’m cornering around that range, the sound will be noticeable.
Can’t reproduce the sound without driving it, so far...
    Thanks for the suggestions

The drums are pretty much sealed. There is a couple of openings in the back with plugs, but it would be highly unusual to get a rock inside a Toyota drum.

That is why drum brakes are the superior option. (I know, I know....:stirthepot:)

    Couple other ideas:

-Have you got under your truck and seen if there is a bunch of play in the u-joints?

-Jack up your truck at each corner and see if the wheel bearings are blown. The wheels should not be able to be rocked back a forth a huge amount. With those larger tires and bigger offset wheels, you will eat through wheel bearings. It’s one of the downsides. There is a good chance this is what it is.

Also, my truck rattled and it was because of a loose cab-mount. It didn’t sound like yours, but made a weird sounds at certain speeds. Took me weeks to figure that out. Check all the bolts underneath.

Hope you get it sorted. Let us all know what you find.

ok so it happens around 10-20mph, but is that only when you apply your brakes? or will it happen even if you don't apply your brakes?

I think I replicated it by downshifting and cruising one time without using brakes

After I posted it I was thinking the same thing. Maybe something inside came loose. I see he’s taking the drums off.

Had a similar noise on my old 2nd gen. It was the centre bearing also I replaced one of the Ujoint that was on its way out.

Does it sound like possibly what you'd get for a loose heat shield or a disc brake shield rattling? Because I think I have that same sound, but I'm not sure because the video taken from the bed of the truck sounds like your gears are missing teeth! But your first video from the street sounds pretty close to what I'm getting.

Here's a video of mine, best I could do, taken from the driver's seat inside a garage with all windows down. Posted this a couple months ago, and nobody had an answer. And I sure couldn't figure it out. At a bit of a disadvantage time and working space wise right now.

    https://i.imgur.com/kqCXsp2.mp4

It almost sounds to me like a loose spring in the rear drum rattling against the drum shield. But can't be sure. It sounds more substantial than a loose heat shield, but less so than something in the differential. Best I can tell it sounds like it is coming from right rear and underneath.

I've spent well over an hour under the truck trying to figure it out. Removed spare, zip tied chain up. Checked every heat shield, nut and bolt I could find. Nothing.

Does it mostly on decelerating right hand 90* turns, sometimes an accelerating 90* turns. But always on 90* slow turns for me and at no other time.

I've got mine in the stealership for service right now as a matter of fact for its last free oil change and for the rear differential leaking seal replacement, as well as for this noise. I asked them to look at this and told them I think something may be loose in rear drum. He called back next day and gave me the "truck has been modified" bullshit, but said they'd still try to track it down (with the disclaimer that it has been modified, and they won't spend a lot of time on it). Have not heard back yet, but am guessing they don't do jack about it. Hopefully I get truck back today and find out.

If the dealership doesn't find it, next step will be to buy a damn go-pro and get it under there in various locations to see if I can narrow it down.

I found the noise by lifting the rear axle both wheels off the ground, got my son to apply gas,on 2wd and track the noise down. I know it's was dangerous lol
