My shift lock solenoid went...can't shift out of park without using the overide...any ideas how to delete the locking mechanism so I can get it inspected without having to stick a screwdriver in the overide?

Could it be your brake switch? I had '93 where the plastic parts started to fail. Brake switch and clutch switch both did with a year of each other.

On some vehicles, even a burnt-out brake light BULB can cause this. The system requires a closed loop and the failed bulb interrupts that loop. Double check that too.

There are some threads on it around here somewhere... is your automatic shifter loose? On mine the plastic bearings were worn out. That causes a misalignment that prevents a switch from being in the correct position. I got stuck at a home depot parking lot one time. After removing the console cover around the shifter, I followed the wiring to a connector nearby under the dashboard and disconnected it. This allowed me to shift the truck and get home. That said... this is dangerous because it removes the locks that prevent you from going in reverse or park while moving forward! The bearings were fairly cheap from Toyota.
