Bad news on V8 UR-series motors from Car Care Nut.

Just came across this. I'm immediately skeptical of these sorts of videos, but Car Care Nut is generally not a clickbaity sort of guy, and when he brings out a sheaf of failed/failing head gaskets from a bunch of motors all with the same failure mode in the same location I get less skeptical.

I'd say the main preventative here is probably to change coolant at least every 50K miles, not 100K+.

At the end of the vid he says 50k or 5 years. Either way it's not gonna stop the warping, right? Just gonna prevent the leaking, maybe...

 

This video is hotly debated on Tundras.com I don't see how this is a "trending" issue. These aren't new engines. They've been around for a long time and a lot of them going the distance with high mileage. Just because he has a half dozen UR's doesn't mean it's a widespread issue.

I'm not discrediting CCN because he has a lot of knowledge and great videos, but I don't see any reason to panic.

 

The 5.7 has its share of problems a major flaw they were never able to rectify in all the years they made it was the infamous cam tower leaks @Superdave1.0 works on some and perhaps he can shed some light on other flaws

 

I've worked on a few of them, and have replaced one 5.7 motor on a Tundra. My neighbor has a 5.7 with 90k miles. He's been chasing a misfire code. Toyota dealer recommended fuel injectors, so they replaced them. I did spark plugs and coils for him. Still has a misfire code. Needs a really good diag.

The 5.7 I replaced that truck had 200k miles. I think that's an acceptable lifespan. Truck was a work truck and not taken care of.

I'm no expert on this motor. I would assume they are reliable for the most part. If you look up misfire 5.7 there are plenty out there.

 

No major issues so far with our 2008 5.7, currently at about 175k, except just a few weeks ago the alternator went out, but it was a relatively quick replacement. No leaks, no codes, no rattle sounds, and it’s done several cross county trips in the last few years. The Car Care Nut video has me concerned, but so far no signs of any impending doom with ours.
