Bad idea to buy a used truck from Minnesota?

So I found a truck I like in Mn. Just worried about potential frame rust or lasting affects from being through a couple winters there with salt.

I'm going to get plenty of pics of the frame before I buy, but am curious if it's a bad idea. I assume there will be surface rust, but how much is too much?

Also, lets say it looks ok, and I coat it with protectant, and 5 years later a hole pops up. Does that void any chance of Toyota replacing it since I "modified" it?

    Thanks
    -Josh

You sure you really want one that is that far from you in the first place? Just wondering....

I looked up the maintenance records and it was religiously taken to the local Toyota dealer for service. Never missing a service. Also no wrecks on record, interior is nice, etc... Everything looks good, just worried about the underside. I have a buddy in the area who will be going by and checking it out for me as well to check the frame.

Why are you considering one so far away?

I would worry about the corrosion if it is any more than two years old but it may have never seen a winter. We don't know....

Dude... 1600ish miles driving from MN to FL plus airfare to get up to MN not to mention the opportunity cost of your time? Unless you're saving $2k over available trucks in FL/GA/AL, dont see how this makes sense.

I'm looking for a specific truck.
White extended cab, black fenders, V6, 4x4, automatic.
There are plenty out there, just not many within a 500 mile radius of me without being extremely overpriced.
This one is exact config I want, low mileage, great price, and great service record. Only 1000 miles from me.

I'm going to have to fly and drive for pretty much anyone I want due to lack of trucks in my area.

I am originally from Rhode Island. They salt and sand the roads out of necessity. I'm 100% certain Minnesota has worse weather and uses more salt and sand on their roads.

Growing up we had old cars because that's all we could afford. ALL of them were rust buckets.

I would stay far, far away from any vehicles from places with shitty weather. Just my opinion.

True. That'd be some luck :D

So around the cats and springs are common areas. Where else?

Living in Minnesota, and driving my third Tacoma currently, I'll shoot some advice:

    1. My first generation Taco shook off rust like a homecoming queen shakes off date requests. It seemed to be impervious.

    2. My second generation Taco is rusting faster than a speeding bullet.

    3. My buddy grew up in Texas, and moved to Minnesota a decade ago. He swears that his trucks rusted just as fast in Texas as they do in Minnesota. YMMV.

So, while my current Taco (2007) is well rusted, it's not rusted THROUGH where the frame is concerned. The body looks factory new to this day. Toyota does a great job of rust proofing their bodies, but the under bodies leave a lot to be desired. But, the underside takes that much more abuse too.
