So I’m getting 16 miles per gallon with a fully rebuilt engine from Toyota truck engine. (New fuel pump filter and injectors) please help. I’ve checked my gas mileage a few times with the new engine and I am getting 16 to 18 miles per gallon it is saying that I should be getting 28 miles per gallon on the highway and I drive two hours round-trip to work on the highway and I’m getting 16 miles to the gallon someone shout out the answer thanks guys

Four cylinder, 5 speed , 2 wheel drive should get 27 or close to it, if you drive flat roads @ 65 mph.

Mountains, high speeds, a heavy foot........all that can change things dramatically.

28..not gonna happen. However, 16-18 is low. Is everything stock? Is it throwing any codes? My mileage dropped last year and I didn't get a code until a couple weeks ago. Repaced O2 sensor (upstream of carb) and mileage has improved from 18 to 22-23 mpg.

Yeah, I had a 4wd 3rz with an automatic and it got about 16mpg city. If you cruise at 60mph on the highway, you can see mid to low 20s.

Then I supercharged it, threw some 33s on it with a bunch of armor, and it was at like 14mpg downhill with a tail wind lol.

If your engine is still fairly new, it might still be breaking in. After break in, the mpg should get slightly better.

When I was 17 I let my Dad talk me into buying a 6 cyl. truck (Ford) because he said they got better mileage and we were having a gas scare at the time. I chased 'good mileage' that truck's whole time with me. Never found it.
New engines don't deliver it any better than old ones. (rebuilt new) Now if you put a 2020 in there, you can get what....21?

As someone who had a 2.4 for a while, yea, they did pretty good. I wish they still made 5 lugger 4 cyl. 5-6 spds.

As long as I owned my truck (last 23 years) 21mpg is good mileage when driving back country roads - that is constant 55mph (with just a bit city driving). My truck has 2.7 engine and 5-speed MT with manual hubs (unlocked of course). The only time I got 24mpg was when I blew a head gasket on one cylinder and computer tried to compensate by leaning the mixture to the point where NOX was at 600 units. (just 1 below legal limit to pass the smog). After fixing head gasket it went back to 21 mpg. The city driving is completely different story - 15-16 mpg.

By the way 28mpg I had in 4 cyl 2.5 Mazda 5 with manual transmission on country roads driving.

One more thing: Highway driving is not the best gas mileage for our trucks - the optimal speed for my truck is about 55mph (that is minimum useful rpm at 5th gear). Anything higher and the wind resistance eats gas, at lower speed the engine is bogging on 5th gear, and running on 4th takes more gas per mile. A can cruise at 50mph on 5th gears but only on flat and no headwind, otherwise the engine does not have enough power to keep it going so I keep 5th gear below 55mph only when slowing down just before downshifting.

I’m right at 18 mpgs on 35’s and 4:56’s with my 96’ 5speed 3rZ with a LCE long tube header and 2.5” exhaust. As long as I don’t drive it like I stole it. I have manual hubs not sure how much I get back from no parasitic loss. The engine is from a 02’. You can still tweak it a little bit more if your stock to get a little better Mpgs.

I did some testing on that. I wanted to be lazy and not unlock hubs all the time, but I was wandering how much it would cost. Leaving hubs in locked position cost me about 1 mpg in my truck. It takes only 30 seconds to unlock hubs and saves about one gallon on one tank so it's worth it.

Mine LOVES 45. If I could do that all day it would happily get 19.
Some 3.4's are just thirstier than others. All there is to it.

Lots of little things add up in the end. Clean MAF, Throttle Body, good flow on the exhaust side, gears... all things that don’t explain why the OPs truck seems to be getting bad mileage but he can tweak to improve it. Hell I live in Washington so I ditch the AC belt 10 months outta the year.

yeah it’s a rebuilt block and all new internals from Toyota truck engine.com. How much did you put into the supercharger kit? And I’m Cruising 75-80 getting 16-18. And I have front and rear trail gear bumpers. I’ve been interested in the supercharger but seems expensive

I think with my bumpers front and rear and the camper shell with the roof rack on it and driving 70-80 that’s just normal gas mileage. Driving 2 hours every day is just making me realize that she drinks

70-80 for 2 hours isn't going to get you good mileage.
