Hey everyone, I'm looking for help diagnosing an issue. I took my Tacoma to the dump the other day pulling a trailer of old shingles. There was about a foot of mud to drive through and the person directing traffic didn't know what they were doing and was getting everyone stuck.

Long story short, I think I burned up my pressure plate. I hadn't been having any issues before getting myself unstuck (locked in 4wd and applied throttle liberally) I was smelling burning clutch and seeing steam come from under my truck. After I let it cool down I got back on the road and noticed it's shaking in 1st gear when starting from a stop. I also notice a faint clutch smell when I drive it but it goes away when it sits.

I'm not having any other symptoms but this has me spooked enough to park it until I find and repair the issue. I think it's a pressure plate but was looking to get some input before I tear it apart.

Also of note I replaced the hydraulics this year.

FYI theres not supposed to be steam coming out of your clutch. If its a white smoke its prob your clutch is smoked/worn whatever you want to call it. I had mine go out and in 5th gear it would start slipping driving down the road. I had it replaced and the flywheel resurfaced. And it works great now.

It's easy to overheat diaphragm pressure plate springs and ruin them so that could be what happened to you :( Did you use low range?

No, my thought was that if I was gonna spin the tires to get out might as well have the power up top. Is it better for the clutch to do that in 4LO?

Yes better to use low range in my experience. You don't have to slip the clutch in low range.
Spinning the wheels without moving just digs a hole.

You overheated the clutch. Doesn't really matter which component as no one (sane) is going to replace just the one that failed anyway, just do an entire clutch kit. The shaking is from 1 or more surfaces glazing and the smoke was from the the disc.

Resurface flywheel and put in a clutch kit.......or go to a clutch shop that does rebuilds on them. Do pilot and throwout bearing too unless you're a gambler.
