    Hello!
New to theis site. Really impressed so far.

Everythng i've read leads me to believe I've a failing master cylinder...but I want to make sure. i'm getting all the sytoms of that being the problem except for one thing: it has started to engage SUPER soon. Like, as soon as i let the clutch up in the slightest. i'm talking about and 8th of an inch: the truck takes off. I treid reverse, started backing up, when i tried to stop i pushed the clutch all the way to the floor and it didn't disengage...it kept trying to back up. I parked it right away and haven't tried driving it at all.

So here is the three things: engages instatnly, reverse didn't quit when i pushed to clutch in, and the pedal gives less resistance and won't come back up.

    Back ground: 5 speed 4x4, SR5, 243k miles and going strong...kinda.

    Thanks!!

(I apologize if i'm posting this in the wrong section or if this question has already been answered: i'll learn, i promise)

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Yes, sounds like you need a new clutch master cylinder. When was the clutch replaced last? You should inspect that before you drop money on a new cylinder.

The clutch pedal is adjustable. If you can adjust that so that the clutch doesn't engage right off the floor and it works, I'd say your clutch plate is getting worn. If adjusting doesn't impact the driving behavior then possibly hydraulics. If the slave is bad it will visibly leak. If you replace the master you may as well do the slave.

Has the clutch ever been replaced?

Thanks for your replays. Clutch was replaced in 05.

Update: replaced master and slave cylinders. Never found leakage from either but the resivor on the master was almost empty and fluid was black.

i adjusted the pedal so that is doesn't have any play.

I don't think I bled the clutch properly. It still engages way soon. I didn't have much patience left at that point--cold, hungry, wet from snowmelt.

I'm going to try and bleed the clutch again tomorrow, fingers crossed.

I replaced my clutch master and slave a few months ago, and my clutch just last weekend, if you're having trouble bleeding it I would highly reccomend some sort of vaccum/power bleeder, I used one and it made the job super easy with one person.

I believe it was under $15 from harbor freight.

Also for future reference (for you and me both) you can get rebuild kits for the slave from the dealer for like $18. Which I'm sure will be much better quality then the auto parts store brand stuff I got
