Discussion Goal: Is it possible to use a 4th Gen key fob part on a 3rd Gen Tacoma?

I came across information that the 4th Gen Tacomas with a certain trim comes with a credit card key fob. I know of the mod some TW members have done where they were able to successfully program a Lexus credit card key fob to work with their Gen 3.

My question is--has anyone attempted to do this with the 4th Gen credit card key fob on their 3rd Gen Tacoma?

Perhaps because it is a Toyota genuine part the process may be more streamlined. I called around today to some San Diego dealerships and found out that part number is 8990H-A1010. However, when I ask service they immediately say it's a no go. I find this hard to believe and I think it's a knee jerk reaction. Though I am basing this off of the fact that is the knee jerk reaction to the Lexus version, yet the smart members of TW have found a way.

Thought I would create a thread if I or someone else becomes a trail blazer...

Shouldn't this be in the 4th gen section?

Let me specify, this is directed towards 3rd Gen owners purchasing a 4th Gen part (the CC key fob). I think this is the proper section to discuss, but if this is incorrect I am more than happy to throw it on that section--though I am not sure if 3rd Gen owners who would benefit from this discussion are actively reviewing the 4th Gen section.

Gotcha, I misread it. Thought you were wanting to get the card to work on the 4th gen. The lexus cards are supposed to work on the 3rd gen.

No problem, I can chalk it up to how I phrased it. I edited the post to make it more clear that this is a 3rd Gen topic.

That was the thread I referred to in my original post.

My understanding is most people have to scan it themselves, because understandably the Toyota tech sees Lexus and isn't interested. This discussion is based on the possibility of success in getting a Toyota dealer to complete the service because there is now a Toyota branded part that would accomplish the same thing as the Lexus part.

There are some in that thread that have had success with the dealer:

Not sure the 4th hen card key works. I would check the model number of the 4th gen card key amd see if it matches the lexus key. I followed the 3rd gen lexus key thread and have had no problems with it. I got it programmed at a locksmith in less than 10 minutes.

Many of us have credit card key fobs for 3rd gens. There is a bit that goes into it. For me, after I got all the necessary parts and keys. I went to a vehicle specific locksmith. Asked them to program the key to a 2015 Lexus is250, going by memory here.(years ago) Short story is that it worked while everyone at the shop said it would never work. The manager was in shock. Apparently Toyota used the same key entry ECU on some Lexus and Toyota. Its not cheap but worth it for whenever you dont want to have keys on you, hiking, skinny jeans out with the misses, running naked, you get the point. I'm a 2017 TRD Sport. It's been working fine for years.

This thrad will explain it --https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lexus-credit-card-key-working-in-tacoma.445979/

Thanks for sharing your Lexus CC experience. I am definitely in the camp of wanting no keys and have been all over that Lexus thread.

I might just have to pick up the 2024 Toyota CC to test this out and be the guinea pig.

I would assume Toyota techs would be more interested in attempting this on a Toyota part than a Lexus part—however Dealers never cease to amaze me on the opinions they take.

In my case I'm very interested as I've been planning to add an aftermarket remote start and alarm to the vehicle which adds a second, bulky fob.
