Ugh. Have a problem I am trying to diag.

Purchased and installed an Alpine ILX-F509, Alpine backup camera and Maestro RR2.

Got the install buttoned up and replaced the crappy aftermarket camera that was on the truck with an Alpine unit.
Shoved the whole mess back into the dash and now the backup camera is very, very intermittent on reverse trigger. It was 100% prior to bolting it in.

Camera works perfect on pressing the camera button but doesn't trigger when shifting to reverse. As in the headunit itself doesn't switch to the backup cam page.
And the rare times it does, it sometimes stays stuck on the camera page, staying after shifting back into D or R.

I think it is a wiring issue more then it is a headunit issue as behind the stereo was a sea of T taps for the old steering wheel interface and chong chong brand backup camera (now gone).

2011 Tacoma, non JBL, OEM backup camera still in the mirror (works fine). This is aftermarket headunit #2, original pioneer started getting buggy.

What I can find NOWHERE on the damn internet is if the headunit is looking for a power or ground to switch to the reverse screen? Anybody know?

i believe the oem backup camera is 6v on the 2011. i would grab a volt meter and check the reverse wire going into head unit. if it's 6v, that would be why the switching is so sporadic. most units are looking for a 12v signal.

They are 6V (OE camera, the Alpine cam is 12v).

Been doing some reading and apparently the Meastro uses CAN data to determine when to fire 12v at the wire on the stereo to trigger the camera.

i had my DVOM tapped into the wire and could see it work once or twice then stop or continue to apply 12v after shifting out of R.

Think I am just gonna tap reverse signal directly and bypass the Meastro.

Is the 12v Alpine camera wired to the reverse signal in your taillight or to the 12v accessory wire in the wiring harness of the radio?

Directly to the radio, it has a single wire 4 pin connector that handles power and video.

Turns out the Maestro uses CAN data to get a reverse signal and it does a crappy job with certain Toyota models (Tacomas specifically from what I was reading). There is a 12v reverse trigger in the plugs on the driver's side kick panel of the truck so I bypassed the Maestro and connected the reverse input of the radio directly to that. Works fine now.

Funny part is I did the same system in my Tundra and it was 100% plug and play.

Sorry I know this is a year old but I am running into the same thing, sporadic rear camera turning when placed in reverse. I have the exact same unit but with the Maestro RR not the RR2. can you please provide me details on how you by passed the Maestro and utilized the 12v in the plugs on the driver's side kick panel? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

There is a connector for the taillight harness in the driver's side kick panel that has (among other things) the 12v for the reverse lights.
TBH, I don't remember the rest of the details (wire color etc).
I located that wire and ran a jumper from it directly to the reverse signal input on the radio's harness.

Thank you, that is what I was looking for. Was not sure if you ran a wire to the Maestro or had disconnected a cable.
