The truck used in the movie was actually a 1985 Toyota Pickup 4x4. The Tacoma didn't exist until 1995.

If you doubt me take a look at my license plate, lol.

Isn't the hilux the euro version? Isnt the one in the movie just a “pickup”?

The production actually used a Hilux and not a Pickup. There were two trucks used in the production, one was given away after the end of filming the first movie since they didn't plan on making a sequel to the movie and the second one is the one you see in Part III - they're both identical Hiluxes.

I've been following the restoration of the second one. It was also given away in a contest and eventually stolen and used as a drug runner in Mexico. It was recovered a couple years ago and the team who restored the hero DeLorean "A" car played a part in restoring that truck. Some rich collector back East owns two of the movie used DeLoreans and the Toyota Pickup. Think the stunt "C" DeLorean sold for like $500k?

Here's a great video on the restoration and history of it.

Okay, firstly, that bit about it being stolen and used by drug runners is, in a word, hilarious.

But only because of your avatar will I defer to you being the expert here. :D

I just thought the hiluxes had the outside bed hooks even up to some of the Tacomas...

The older Toyota Pick-Ups actually had the outside hook rail, think they stopped it in the late 70's early 80's. The truck was an '85 so it was gone by that point.

Have you seen the license plate on my black truck? Lol.

This is correct. The truck(s) used in the movies were just refered to as Toyota Pickups and not Hiluxes because they were US model trucks. The Hilux was only sold overseas. The US Toyota Pickup, is however, very similar to the foreign Hilux, it was just never called the Hilux here in the states. A family member used to have a truck similar to the one in the movie, an 85 Pickup with the 22re and SFA, a rare combination. Wish he never would have sold it, those things are worth a ton now. Normally I would agree with BartMaster1234, but this is something I feel strongly about for some reason and felt like I needed to rebut :D

    Well, sort of...

For the American market, you'd be correct.

The outside bed rails are still around, at least in the Aussie market, note the Hilux badges:

The Aussies still like to make fun of us dumb Americans for wanting a pickup truck without a way to easily tie stuff down in the bed. Form over function for us, function over form for them...

Our wimpy American trucks are just referred to as pickups, at least until the Tacoma came along.

Looks like I'm wrong about it being a Toyota Hilux, that's what it says on the Wiki and a ton of other sources. The company that restored the truck actually states it is a Toyota Pickup.

Huh. Did not realize that was still a thing, weird to see that on a modern truck.

Yep, ugly as sin, but obviously more useful - cargo-wise...

I think the confusion with the "hilux" is that people have this need for vehicles to have a "name", like the Tacoma. Back in the day, it was just the "pickup", at least here in the US. But because Toyota had a pickup truck in other markets with an actual name, people think the US trucks are the Hilux. But if you look at those pics I posted, there are clear differences in the trucks beyond just the bed rails. The white cab (from 2008 I believe) looks more like a Honda Pilot, and the grey one (2016?) looks kinda like a Tunrda.
