Use carriage bolts instead of regular bolts / screws. It's still not going to prevent thieves but it slows them down a lot.

Personally my front and rear plates are held on with 3/8" bolts that would require two wrenches and some time to remove.

Take it one step further - use socket head cap screws button head variety so you can't get a good grip with vice grips. I can't imagine a thief would have a set of allen wrenches on them. Even better still, go metric...

Why not use nuts/bolts and tack weld the nut....might have to remove the bumper to do it but it ain't going anywhere after that.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
because it cost you money to get two new ones. God Bless NY.

I had this happen years ago and went to bolts with big wide washers that would make tearing the plate off much more difficult. Never had it happen again but subsequently put it out of mind and haven't bothered with the extra steps on the last few vehicles. Instead some douchenozzle took my gas cap last year.

I'm from Fresno and I'm honestly not even surprised lol. I would go with any of the options listed above. I got to get some locking screws as well since I have a back up camera on my license plate
