Now that I've properly diagnosed the problem with my Tacoma, I wanted to ask if anyone has been able to successfully fix this problem without the assistance of a dealership. I just use a factory key (no fob).

Note: My Tacoma only stalled one time and then I was able to get it restarted after waiting about 45 minutes. It has worked fine since then. However, I do NOT want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere and have this happen again.

I searched the forums but there was not too much resolution to this particular problem. Is this a known problem in the 2009 Tacoma?

Pretty sure most vehicles with an immobilizer issue require a factory scan tool or probably a very expensive aftermarket one. The whole idea is that not just anyone can program it.

    That makes sense.

Yeah immobilizer is like a hot girlfriend that cheats on you. It's all going good then it randomly strands you.

I know on a lot of older stuff you can easily defeat these with a tuner. I would inquire if maybe HP Tuners gives you the ability to delete anti theft if you are that concerned. But we are talking like $800 to have that conversation between hardware and credits.

Maybe a local tuner that already has the hardware could do it cheaper.

I mean it is very rare that immobilizer shuts you down but it will kill it all and make you walk when it does.

Nope. Immobilizer has its own computer completely separate from the ecu. HPTuner cant touch it. Swapping out ecus you have to perform an Immobilizer to ecu handshake process that takes 30min with a paperclip on the right pins of the OBD connector.

    Damn that sucks.

One day the engine ECU had to talk to the body ECU which must finger prick for a DNA sample but only after scanning your face via the rearview mirror camera. Then and only then the body ECU will send a secret handshake to allow engine start.

I am surprised you cannot bypass this in the factory ECU with tuning software. Always a pain with Jap stuff. If you owned a domestic car your tune would bitch slap the engine computer into making you a margherita while driving.
