Just do a search for exhaust dump. Plenty of photos already out there.

It just your exhaust cut on the downward angle after the muffler

Does this help clearance with larger spares?

Ive been thinking of doing this, but my wife pointed out that our trailer and bikes on our rack will get exhast fumes on them while towing (we leave vents open when traveling)... this reminded me of how I popped a bike tire a long time ago from my bike being too close to the exhast pipe tip on my first car, so I know first handed that it happens. Anyways, my idea is to keep the pipe end and put a flange on both ends of the cut, so I can remove the pipe end when offroad, and put it back on afterwards.

A local TW'er donated his stock exhaust in case I hosed mine up, or the sound / drone was unacceptable. Thanks, @Bertw192 !

Talk about going over the top, he also helped with the mod. My plan was to dump it ahead of the axle. So, we hacked off enough to make a stub at the end of the muffler. Then cut away a bent section of the tail to expand and use as a down turn tip. Bert also brought along hanger pliers to help with removal. It was going quick until we tried out the HF expander that I bought. That was the first tool from HF that really failed me. After a couple tries, the best that we cold do was to slot the tip and expand that enough to fit. It isn't great at the moment but has been hanging on until I can hit an exhaust shop for a properly expanded tip.

I will get a pic of mine as well as the finished version. There is plenty of room behind the stock muffler to do this. The tip will heat up, but there is nothing getting to the axle.

I get a bit of rumbly reverb in the garage. At normal RPMs with the slider open, it sounds pretty much identical to the stock setup except at heavy throttle in the higher RPMs. There, I will hear the exhaust rushing, but that could be the exposed end of the slots dumping some pressure? At highway speeds with the slider open, I will hear a hint of rumble (drone?) when climbing hills in 6th. I haven't driven it yet with the slider closed.

    I'm calling it a success.

Hahahaha! I had the exact same thing happen to me. It was an '86 Celebrity. I think it was the last project my dad and I worked on was to kludge on a weird bumper clamp bike rack. It grabbed the forward lips of the bumper and was a beyotch to install and remove. I must have typically loaded it with the front wheel on the drivers side. I don't know why I flipped it around, but heading home from school, the front tire burst. It scared the crap out of me. Freaking hilarious after I figured out that I wasn't being shot at.

On the fumes, all of our cars and bikes had an exhaust smell on cold starts in the garage, except the Taco. When they were new, it was a sweet, raw smell that tended to be more pungent as the motors got older. I think the Taco emissions controls are over the top? A good thing in my book?

Also, if you watch cars / trucks going down the road in the rain, you will see a swirl of mist that curls up and in toward the middle of the vehicle. Given this, I really doubt there is any change in what would be directed toward trailer windows? Just my $0.001.

    Nice!

I saw that tip, but it was too long for my situation.

Good to link these two threads together. This thread was the only one with axle dump in the title.

Thanks! I should take a side view pic to show that it really isnt that long and works well. I kept the last hanger for better support, was concerned about all that pipe hanging on just the other hanger, and I wanted to be sure rhe fumes get out from under the truck. I have enough clearance now to crawl over a medium sized rock or drop under the right rear wheel without hitting the pipe - just have to watch my stock bumper and fender back there... :)

I know that can slip on pretty far, but where I chopped mine, I only have about 10in to the axle and need about 45deg to not expose it to the heat. I think that one was longer than the crappy one that I fabbed which barely fit on the cold pipes.

There are three hangers for just the muffler. One for the tail plus some sharing into the muffler ones is definitely golden.

The other reason I did this is to experiment with some mufflers. I'm not sure if I will get to that, but that was the idea. Hahaha!

I did touch down back there twice. Thankfully it was an even surface and the hitch took all the abuse. I'm thinking about a hitch skid. Although, that RCI bumper is damn nice also.

I put on a RCI dif skid, but a rear hitch/step skid is a good idea, also up front if you have a receiver hitch there. There was a member on here that advertised making hitch skids in the past, but he hasnt PM replied to me for several months now. Curt sells them pretty reasonably priced:

I do need to do something up front since all that I have are the weak points on my Sport. I would have been screwed if I did the snow run that happened on Sunday:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/february-2019-seattle-area-meet.590508/page-10#post-19952452

I slept in and played with the axle dump instead.

I might try to pick up a take off OR recovery point and get the ARB one as soon as possible. For armor, I am thinking about a take-off tank skid also just as a starting point. That was my trouble spot this fall.

Ok- here is my side view:

My $10 chrome tip looks crappy since I put it on, but thats how it goes after running around with it in NM and TX last winter. It looks like the rest of the stock pipe, too. “Stainless” my eye!
