Anyone ever have an issue where an OBD scanner can’t “connect” to your vehicle? Happened at 2 different places.

Do you often keep something plugged into the OBD port (scangauge ultragauge Bluetooth obd)? If you do its possible that the spring tab in the pins of the obd port have been bent back and not making contact with their reader.

I’ve plugged in this bullshit code reader that was supposed to connect to your phone because my mother in law gave it to me but I took it out immediately after. Other than that 1 incident I’ve never plugged anything into it. But I did have autozone scan it when I first bought my truck 4 years ago and that worked just fine.

IMO: Operator error. Try PepBoys, NAPA, O'Reiley's, Carquest, etc. But honestly, in my experience they are all hit or miss. Depends on the person, Tide, Phase of the moon, weather, hate the manager, don't like you..... YMMV

I’ll def try somewhere else but it did give them same error both autozones I went to. Even when the key was on the on position and when the engine was running.

I mildly suspect that half the time, it's the AZ employee that's the problem. They aren't getting paid extra to walk out to the lot and plug into customer's nasty ass cars, so half the time they don't care.

Last time I used them we got a P303 clear as day. At the time I didn't know what that meant and the AZ clerk just shrugged and said "we don't know what that means. Take it to the dealer." Thanks, dude, I'll remember that level of helpfulness.

Remove the panel by driver side footwell and look further up the OBD2 line. There can be two OBD2 connections. the one further up may be disconnected resulting in the one not working.

Interesting, I’ll have to take a look.
Lol yeah that’s irritating, lots of people just don’t wanna be good at their job. But i just don’t get how they could mess it up, you just plug it in and I saw the dude push one button to read it, just kept giving an error.

20 years ago. I worked at Autozone
I absolutely hated scanning cars for codes.
A scanner doesn’t tell you what’s wrong with the car, it tells you were to start looking.

I told people multiple times weekly, the O2 sensor probably won’t fix the light.
And we didn’t take back any electrical parts unless it was bad. You can only exchange it for a new one.

I will say, I liked the job. The company was great to work for.
The worst part was having a guy throw an alternator at me.
But no biggie. Life goes on. And he didn’t get his money back.

I had this happen on a early 00's Silverado and it turned out there was a fuse affiliated with the OBD port that was blown. Replacing that made the truck scannable again. Maybe there's one for it on tacomas too? Worth a look.

    I’d try a different scanner.
And I’d also like to know if their scanner had its own power source?
Most use the B+ on the DLC.

Not really enough info here to give much advice.
You could check powers and grounds on the DLC.
And resistance on the can lines, but I’d try a different scanner first.

Unless you have a scope, then you could see if there was activity?

Check the 7.5A OBD fuse. It’s in the engine bay

I have a girl bringing her Kia in today because they keep having to jump start it. After the jump the vehicle will run fine with no warning lights, only issue is when it sits and needs to start

She went to OReilly last week for a "free" test. They told her "the voltage regulator in the alt is bad". Her boyfriend installed a new alternator, problem is still there.

Just from her description over the phone I practically already know the battery is bad.

Beware the "free" diagnosis from an untrained parts store employee.

Not only was it probably a weak battery all along, now there is a shitty reman alternator bolted in, no telling when that thing will crap out. The better quality alternator is sitting in a bin somewhere waiting to get rebuilt and resold

I'm just saying , don't expect them to know (or care) why the scanner won't communicate
