Does anyone know where the auto headlight sensor is located? My headlights have been coming in during a bright sunny day. What would cause that other than a dirty sensor or something covering it? Thanks.

It’s on the rear view mirror if I’m not mistaken.

There’s a forward facing sensor on the rear view mirror. Is that what you guys are saying is for the auto-dim mirror? I thought that sensor faced rearward.
The sensor on the dash is definitely for auto headlights, but I’m not certain it’s for the auto brights. Wouldn’t that sensor face forward and be higher than the dash to detect on-coming traffic?
I’m pretty sure auto high beams are part of Toyota safety sense so wouldn’t it be in the big clunky plastic piece high on the windshield?

^This. Either faulty sensor, wiring, or there's something blocking the sensor. In techstream you can adjust the sensitivity.

The forward facing sensor on the rear-view mirror is for detecting ambient light-levels. The rear-facing sensor on the rear-view mirror is for detecting light coming from behind your truck by other drivers. BOTH are used to control the view of the rear-view mirror.

The sensor which detects lights from on-coming traffic is the one on the dash at the passenger-side tweeter.

That controls headlights auto on. See the link I posted above
I can only find references to that sensor being used for auto on.
Edit: as homiec posted, the manual refers to the dash sensor as a “headlight control sensor” while the subsequent pages refer to the automatic high beam sensor as a “camera sensor”.
I maintain that the auto high beam sensor is part of TSS and the sensor is located in the cluster high on the windshield

I've started my Sport with the sun visor in-place and the headlight icon display will light up for a minute after removing the visor.

I figured the camera on the rearview mirror was the sensor for the auto high beams.

It sounds like the high beam sensor is on the mirror and the auto headlights sensor is on the right hand tweeter cover. There is nothing over mine. Maybe it is dusty but I wouldn't think that would cause it. If I turn the switch to off then back to auto, the headlights stay off. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.

I know this is an old thread but this is where I was sent when I googled “Toyota Tacoma 2023 auto headlights” because I was wondering why my headlights are on when it’s sunny outside. Saw this post and when I looked at the sensor my hat was on top of it

For me it was malfunctioning because I had a dash cam covering the sensor on the front of the mirror. When I moved the dash cam the auto lights on started working properly again. I don't think the dash sensor is responsible for the auto headlights because they were malfunctioning with nothing obstructing it. Or perhaps they both work together with some sort of algorithm deciding when to turn on the headlights.
My automatic brights worked perfectly even with the sensor in front of the mirror being obstructed so that sensor is definitely not for the auto brights.

Wow! There are 14 different answers to the original question.:)

Knowing that the auto lights on/off sensor is on the right side of the dash, I am curious if anyone has tried this?

I like leaving my headlights on "auto" so that I can never get caught driving without lights. But ...... mine don't come on until it is pretty dark and I like driving with my headlights on in dull, rainy, overcast weather so people can see me.

I'd like to partially block some light to the sensor so the lights will come on in low light conditions. Maybe cover 1/2 of the sensor with black electrical tape?

    Any suggestions?

With a Techstream you can adjust the sensitivity.

Second for ecu settings. I used Carista to have headlights come on sooner and stay on later.
Soundman pointed out the same setting is available on the OEM headunit

I just leave the headlight switch in the on position. That way they are on in all conditions and I'm never caught with them off when they should be on. They will auto shutoff after a set time of the vehicle being off or with 2 pushes of the lock button on the fob.
