I've run into an issue i was wondering if anyone else had. My radio randomly when i start my truck has no audio. It has done it for a few months like once a month but would fix itself if i turned the truck on and off. Well now its almost daily.

I get no audio in any option XM, AM,FM, Bluetooth, etc... It shows at the truck start a little music note with a line through it at the top left of the screen and i get no audio. If i try to adjust the volume at the wheel or on the radio itself the little bar showing the adjustment doesn't even come up.

Usually in the past i would just turn the truck on and off and that would fix it but it hasn't worked in the last week.

Like i said its random. Yesterday it didn't work when i ran to get some breakfast in the morning but in the afternoon when i went to the grocery it was working fine. This morning dead again. No audio.

I thought it might be something with my phone so i completely removed it and its still had the issue. I've tried dropping and reconnecting the phone from the Bluetooth both from the phone and from the truck itself and no luck. I ran the recent entune update and no luck.

As a background i have pulled the radio out for a few mods to get back there so maybe a lose wire? I didn't think that made sense since it worked randomly and never cut in and out. It just worked or it didn't.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Since you were back there then the first thing you should do is check all the plugs. It could be that one was barely making contact that would cause the randomness, now its just completely loose.
Once you go back and reconnect everything if it still does not work, then you can go further.

By the way, thanks for letting us know you did pull the radio, as it makes things a little easier to understand. I see some people come here with issues and after about 20 replies with help, then they say, oh by the way, I did tamper with such and such and this is when the problem started.

Yeah, was talking to a friend and we came to that conclusion as well. I'll have to to just find a wiring diagram to make sure its all in there when i pull it out again.

my symptoms were different (and i have JBL, so yours may be different), but the cause may be the same.

For me, i was only getting sound from the driver door, (not even the tweeter) and it was muted. and nothing I did would fix it, other than sometimes it would just randomly start working. eventually, it was found that some brilliant engineer (sarcasm), decided that it was a smart idea to run the supply to the amp (behind the back seat), through the rear door. opening and closing the door caused rubbing and eventually shorted the wire to GND. that whole section of wiring harness had to be replaced and additonal protection added(under warranty). its possible that yours is the same culprit: a short to gnd of a wire that is getting pinched.

Does the wiring run under the door paneling near the door sills? I have messed around in that area pretty often. I have the JBL as well. But everything I've done was 8+ months ago.

I’ve had this exact thing happen one time. Never had the radio out. Going to see if it happens again before making the trip to the dealership.

Yeah it started out as a very rare occurrence and slowly got to where it is now. Have you done anything that would require you to pull the radio out of curiosity?

Only bad thing with the dealership is if its random they have to be able to reproduce it. I remember when my battery was dying I literately had to have my battery die at the service desk for them to replace it lol.

Here is the answer to your question.. . . "i have pulled the radio out for a few mods".

You can forget warranty work if they find that out.

IIRC several units have been replaced for folks with problems you describe. Seems like it was more on 16's. (also whole instrument clusters being replaced)

When it doesn't work, don't do anything but drive straight to dealer and show it to them not working. Explain if you turn the truck off and restart it may work fine, but you need them to see it not working.

Im not sure, as i haven't actually taken it apart myself. as long as its under warranty, i let the dealership deal with it. I believe that the wiring runs to the rear right passenger door via the rubber flex tube and then some how magic happens and it runs back through the same flex tube and continues under the door sills to the amp, if i had to make a guess. I can say that it is a manufacturing defect, so if the wiring is found to be the problem, toyota is covering it reguardless.

what he said. they MUST see it not working to trouble shoot it, even if it works when you restart it or something. for me it took about 2 months for it to happen where i was able to bring it to them. then as soon as they saw that it was a problem, it started working for them for no reason, so they at least knew that there was a problem for them to spend time on.

I had a little time on my way home so i stopped by the dealer. They looked at it, said they ran some kind of update and unhook the battery let it sit for a bit and hooked it back. It worked when they did that but said they would talk to the shop foreman in the morning to see if he knew of any fixes if it does it again. They took down my head unit info and said that they would probably just replace the head unit if it does it again.

Must be common if they didn't try to give me any kind of run around. Guess its still early in the process.

This exact issue happened on mine two days ago. Just riding along then no sound, red slash upper left just like yours. Turned off Bluetooth, just like you, nothing. Then I went in "Options" and I saw that both "HD Radio" and "FM Radio" were checked. I checked and unchecked those a few times, then only checked "FM"; sound came back. It was like it was causing some sort of software conflict. Before you start pulling out wires, take a look at that. Mine hasn't done it since then.

Thanks! Yeah it seems like it was something on the software side or thought maybe something with my phone as well. I'll try it next time it does it.

No luck with that fix. When I left for work this morning it was out and tried this with no luck. I called the dealer this morning and they are suppose to let me know if they will be ordering a replacement or going to try something else this evening.

I have the same trouble on my 2016 Taco TRD. Sometimes, just after i start, all the functions on the audio system do a long « reload » during 1 minutes before i recover the sound and other. But the problem is when i want to show the problem to Toyota dealer, the truck don't do that!?!

Any idea how they "reprogramed" it? My 17 having this issue now and I'm out of warrantee. Any problems for you since?
