Went for a surf and heard a car alarm go off. When I came back to the truck the valet key I take into the water was super hard to work into the lock. Accessory mode was engaged... guess that was my alarm I heard!

Fob was hidden and disengaged, which saved my truck.

Ordering a console safe tonight to lock the fob into. Anyone have a rec for a good security camera setup? I bet I’d recognize the jackass that did this based on where I surf. A cam that gets triggered at startup would be perfect to catch this low life.

    TIA

Go pro attached to your phone maybe, but your phone would have to be out of the truck. I saw some tow hitch lock boxes... it’s a hidden little lock box that fits in the tow hitch. Pretty cool idea if it keeps the fob far enough away

You’d need two cameras to cover all sides of the truck... or- perhaps a 360fly 360-degree HD camera left on in the cab may be useful? B&H has them for sale for less than $100... even though the video quality is not excellent, it’s good enough that you could id a face looking inside any of the windows of the truck. you can even take it surfing for 360 video...

Thanks. I’ll look into this more but seems like you’d need an impact/broken glass to trigger cam. What happened to me (lock jacked) set the alarm off but wouldn’t have tripled an owl cam(?).

Not sure, haven’t ordered one yet...but I think it’s the direction I’m leaning. It seems like it would trigger the video if there was enough “impact” to set off the alarm. Cloud-based video recording, so at least you could potentially get a lead. Have to wait for a paycheck or two (teacher), then maybe I’ll try it out.

Owl cam looks cool but its $10/mo for the LTE wireless service after the first year. Your idea of hiding a remote phone in the car to record with may be a good thing... it seems like the largest risk is having the camera stolen as mentioned so I like the idea of having a remote recorder hidden away too.

btw- I bet there are phone apps that do the same thing as a Owl cam, even with sound or motion detection... haven’t looked, but since I just thought of it it has to be there already! :)

Isn’t that the truth? Had a couple of genius ideas only to find out it’s already a thing. Apparently there are smarter people than me out there (I know... hard to imagine

I plan on buying the Rexing V1 front/rear dashcam with Parking Mode wiring. This provides a 300+ degree view of your truck, triggered recording based on motion sensor or vibration when the truck is off, small LCD screen to view in the truck, and an adapter can be bought online to utilize the GoPro mount. It's under $200 as a total kit, so it's in the affordable range. Nearly every review I've read says that the Rexing V1 is the best overall value for the money and proven reliability.

Not true. Some dash-cams can post real time data to a designated location on the Internet and some manufactures offer 30 minutes of storage for free. Some of those models can be triggered not to over write the data in the cloud, but continue recording in the local box. However, this kinds of cloud connected feature is on the pricey side.

Rexing V1P is the dual camera version, great quality and about $129 versus the $99 for the V1 model. Worth the extra $29. I’m sure you can shop it and find it for even a little less...Rexing starts recording as soon as the vehicle is turned on...I find dash cams more useful nowadays for proving fault than for theft or vandalism.

There are also dash cams that start recording even when the vehicle off if the car is bumped or banged, can come in handy for hit n runs, or parking bumps by others novice drivers...

I use NEST Cams. Link to WIFI and can be viewed from your phone or other device. Night and Day capabilities. 20 bucks a month for 5 days of storage for 6 cameras. 1080p video quality. They arent the cheapest but well worth it. I got all 6 for about 700 bucks.

You can get a GPS assset tracker and put it in your truck. It’ll alert you if your vehicle moves and tracks it anywhere there’s cell service.

I’ve heard of vehicles getting stolen by flatbed trucks, they just pull it onto a flatbed and they’re gone.

Just put a LoJack sticker on each door window. Might deter them from trying to get away with it.
