Attaching tie downs to OUTSIDE of bed

    Still in planning phase ...
    Instead of using the thin sheet metal of the outside of the bed, have you considered getting something like the KB Voodoo steel or aluminum replacement bedcaps and putting tie downs or hooks for the tarp on those? Guess they don't make them in steel anymore, but IIRC someone else fabricated these as well. I have the steel ones and they seem pretty solid and capable of being used to anchor a tarp too. They mount behind the bed rails and are not going to go anywhere.

    nice system, $190 not so nice, due to how it mounts could interfere with rollup tonneau cover that also fits behind the rail.

    On some kayak sites (and Etrailer), I found several options for "kayak bow" tie downs. Some simply slip between your hood and front fender, some secure to a bolt in the engine bay, then, they all slip through the gap in the hood as a anchor point. This may be a way for you to go, for the truck bed? Zip tie the strap out of the way when you're not using it? Or a magnet?
