If you have changed tire size from the OEM original size did you also upgrade your spare to match the size or are you just keeping the original spare.

I just purchased 265/70-17s to replace the factory 265/65-17 but didn't upgrade the spare, should I have? Will the larger size fit in the original spot for the spare without modification?

It should fit the spare location there's some guys with way bigger tires in that location. I would get the same size spare if I were you, just less likely to mess something up if all the tires are the same size

It's a 13mm difference (.5inches) it's like running a worn down 265-70-17. You will be fine with your current spare.

You're spare is fine. Remember those less than full size spares on most cars?

Just make sure if you have to use a spare, you aren't on locked diffs

It's the diameter that matters. If two tires that share a differential are different, it's not ideal.

I would prefer a proper size spare.

Depends on what you do with the truck. If it's your DD and always within 50 miles or so from a tire shop, keep the original spare. You can always disable VSC and TRAC if they act up while you're driving on the spare. If you take long trips off road, overland, etc., get a matching spare.

If the diameter doesn't match you can mess up your differential if you run the mismatched spare on the drive wheels. Put the mismatched one up front if you must.
A lot of cars come with non-matching spares but the diameter is the same. And they were not meant to be run regularly, just for emergency.

Spend the extra $200 or whatever it costs and get a matching spare, worth the peace of mind

It's a daily driver for the most part and it is unlikely that the spare will ever hit the ground. In a perfect world I guess I would get a matching wheel and tire and rotate all 5.

Yes. 315/75r16 spare on matching spare wheel. I rotate it into my tire rotations every 5k miles.

check ebay for used tires. I got my full size spare duratrac on there for like $50 shipped. 14/32" and only two years old and no repairs. Also tire shops might keep a look out for a stray that comes in your size

If your new tires are a big difference from your factory spare, it’s always a good idea to go ahead and match the sizes depending on how you use your truck. Even if you have 33’s and you use the factory spare in a pinch you won’t die, but your truck will be a little wonky for a minute while you wait to get a matching replacement tire

Anyone know how big of a wheel/tire the factory spare location allows for?

    I have 265/75-16 tires and a 235/85-16 spare.

Same diameter but that spare can be used for my trailer and gives me 1.2” more ground clearance and tucks up behind my trailer hitch so it doesn’t get scraped when I drag the tail end. Works for me.

I too am in the "matched" diameter spare group:

    285/75/16 = 285/70/17 with the bracket moved.
