Are you guys reusing the antisqueal plates on your front pads when changing pads ?
Mine are dirty. Didn't know whether to just slap them back on, or clean them and put some of that red antisqueal stuff in between.

    Thanks.

Quality pads will normally come with new shims.

You can clean the old ones and use anti squeal lube in the same way you do in your bi-annual brake servicing.

More for folks who off road a lot and/or live in salt country.

It's worth while to clean, lube, adjust brakes on a minimal of bi annual basis.

No new parts generally needed, unless your work finds something needing attention.

Water, mud, salt are not good for any part of the vehicle, but tip top brakes are good for all of us. :D

Bought them from the dealer and no shims. Rip off.

Did they use anti squeal lube on the factory build or rely on just the shims? Hard to tell from the old ones.
Looks like the rubber between the shims takes the place of the lube ?

some of the cheap-o pads don't come with shims. you can just clean and reuse them.

Dunno. I've never had a new one apart.

IIRC Toyota offers 2 types of replacement brake kits. A std. and a value set, value being pads only, std. having all the other bits. But I could be wrong about that. Or it could have changed.

I replace the shims if they are rusting / falling apart. if they are in good physical condition i will clean them and re-use with new grease.

I just changed my front brakes last month with OEM pads and rotors. They didn't come with new shims, but I reused mine. So far no issues.

I'm a Toyota tech, I can confirm there are two different "grades" of pads. The difference is one comes with new shims, at a much higher price. The other w/o shims. We always clean and reuse the original shims when possible. I have done this on vech with 150K plus miles with no issues. So reuse your originals without worry my friend.

So you are saying no grease between shims ?

Also, are both grade pads the same, it's just the added shim pack, or are the pads better in the ones with the shims ?

Dealer wants $100 just for the pads.

From what I can tell. The shims is the only difference between the two different grades of pads. Both grades of pads have the same numbers and markings on them. Put grease between the back of the pad and the shims. It doesn’t take a lot. Just a thin layer to hep the shim stick to it. At my dealer the pads w/o the shims are $70.

I'm getting ready to replace the pads with a set from my local dealer. He recommended to replace the shims but from what I'm reading I can reuse the old ones. Pads only is $66, shims are $35.

Whether you clean and use the original shims or new ones, always coat with anti squeal grease

When i did the brake pads on my tundra you only got their box with the ceramic pads. I was able to reuse those anti-squeal shims, but had to buy the caliper pad pins to replace the badly rusted, and grooved up ones.
