Are my odds of getting a 22/23 Lunar Rock TRD Off Road Premium as bad as it seems?

I'm new to the forum. I have been saving my $$$ and finally have a nice chunk to put down on the Tacoma of my dreams...BUT...It is proving next to impossible to find the one with the specs I'm looking for...Am I being too specific?? Is this a new thing? I understand the chip shortage has a lot to do with it (dealership I put a deposit through said this has impacted premium trim vehicles the most)...But, wow, I didn't realize how discouraging this would be. Any advice, encouragement, or intel would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
Toyota of Surprise, AZ has a TON of Tacoma's in moon dust coming in regularly, all trim levels. That's how I got stuck with one...

On January 18th I put a deposit down on a Lunar Rock TRD OR Premium. I was built 8 months later and delivered mid Sept. I was offered red, white, and everything in between while I waited. If a Lunar Rock is what you have your mind set on then wait. It also allows you to save a little bit more $$ in the meantime. I have no regrets and I got what I wanted.

    Broaden your choices or wait.

I would have said to be open to traveling and take a nice road-trip back, but a lot of dealers I contacted would not sell to customers that aren't local to them. That has happened when I was searching for my '22: dealers would either won't sell to non-local customers or they will have you pay markup.

Thanks all! Looks like I’m gonna settle in and wait. I’m open to a couple of other colors too, and I let my dealership know. Guess we’ll see. :p

Lots of info here on this thread. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...2-order-request-whatever-it-is-called.724431/ Again, you’ll want to place deposits at multiple dealerships.

Agreed. I would put my name down on as many no-markup dealerships that has a refundable deposit.

I put my name down on one dealership for a Tacoma TRD Off-Road 6MT several months before I put my name down on other dealerships. The second to last dealership whom I put my name down with got one for me. All the others, including the first dealership who I put my name down with, never even remotely got a manual Tacoma of any trim level.

Welcome! You can certainly get what you’re looking for if you can wait or have a good relationship with a dealership.

Rising interest rates will dampen demand for all vehicles especially high-end trims. Only in the last couple weeks have I seen anything at dealerships for sale. I think in two months you will find most car lots will have several unsold vehicles. Right now they aren't selling much of anything.

I looked for mine for awhile, got crazy offers to take something else, but I waited for the exact thing I wanted, no comprises, the exact truck.

one Friday morning it showed up online in a auto trader search at a dealer 100 miles away and I had the day off.

I never stepped onto the dealer lot, I did the whole thing from my recliner and I paid under msrp and the dealer delivered it to my home that night, we signed paperwork on the tailgate.

I was told my truck was a unicorn, AC, lunar rock, OR loaded but the dealer still negotiated.

They originally told me $5k mark up and 2.5k dealer add ones. I told them I don’t do business with dealers who markup, I didn’t want the add ones and I wouldn’t negotiate a penny over msrp and to lose my phone number as I will wait for another dealer to come through. I ended up about 1k under msrp.

Most dealerships won't sell out of state anymore. Toyota put the breaks on that (no pun intended) last year. The best strategy is to place 3 or 4 different deposits on the truck you want. Make sure each delearship has refundable deposits. You basically want to cast a larger net..

Then you need to manage your relationships with each delearship. Ask them how their list works, where you are on it. Find out when the two allocation dates for your region are. Then ping your delears tye night before. Remind them of your specific truck. Be annoying. They can trade allocations regionally, if your annoying enough, they will magically find your exact truck.

You should be emailing or calling 4 delears twice a month.

This strategy truly does work. I've already passed on 2 Solar Octane PROs this year (I'm hunting 4 a solar octane manual T)

Remember, the squeaky wheel, always gets the grease.

    Goodluck and welcome to TW
