Hey guys, I have a little issue with my front suspension. The front is super stiff and bumps are pretty harsh. I have bilstein 5100 with the stock coils on the lowest setting or the "stock" setting on the shock. Im thinking my coils are worn out causing this stiffness. Do worn out coil springs cause a stiff ride? I was thinking they would get softer as they age but after watching this video I think mine are no good. If you skip to 2:25 in the video you can see how easy it is to compress the front. Mine doesn't go down by hand very much at all. Do I need new coils?

i was told by a muffler/brake/suspension shop guy in business a long time that the only purpose of the coil springs is to keep the front area level and not sagging and basically has nothing to do with ride quality unless i guess your truck is not level in the front :notsure:

but i really don't know much more about it

That’s what mine looked w/92K before i replaced them with Monroe Quick Struts (yes I know they’re coilovers but that’s what Monroe calls them) and my ride is greatly improved. It eliminated the bone jarring thump that I got on the neighborhood speed bumps.

are you certain the coil springs change to coilovers made that much of difference rather than just replacing the shock absorbers inside of the coil springs?
    i am so confused :(

No I’m not sure. And since my truck is really more of a hobby than anything else, I decided it didn’t matter. I wasn’t going to put 15 year old springs on new shocks or new springs in 15 year old shocks and I wasn’t going to break the bank for a truck that’s driven around town once or twice a week. I took the easy route. Monroe’s have decent customer reviews, Amazon shipped to my door and for $150 and 3 hours of my time my problem was solved. YMMV

yes i don't know much about this, was just chatting with the local Toyota master mechanics about the situation i have to see what options there are available for the front suspension
they said that very RARELY are the OEM coil springs ever bad if not in an abusive environment (for lack of a better word)

    OME and worth every penny.
When I bought my '00 it had new Rancho's on. The PO said the stock Bilstiens rode harsh so he had new (crap) shocks installed and still didn't like it. It was harsh. The prg. coils also looked just like above, all the soft part was collapsed.

The rear was shit too so I bought all new EMU. God it rode nice. For a few years. It prob. needs at least new shocks again now.

Hey, get your reasonable and frugal approach to vehicle maintenance in check and fork over thousands on suspension like the rest of us!

Maybe if the Garage Queen was V6 FWD and I was blazing trails or doing some of the cool overland trips I see I’m this forum but I just can’t justify that kind of money to go pick up a pizza or 1/2 gallon of milk. So I’ll live vicariously through those of you that do and keep saving for retirement.
