Here's the deal. I just realized that 99-04 models have a different MAF than 95-98 3.4s. The plug looks the same but the sensors are majorly different in size.

Aka is a newer 3.4 MAF setup compatible with my 96? Also would the smaller MAF give my engine more power due to less obstruction in the intake tube?

Yes it can be made to work but you must repin the plug to work with the newer one.

Without looking I don`t remember just what wires need to be moved.

I run the newer style on my 98 3.4 along with the newer style air filter housing and intake hose.

Awesome! Did you notice any gains in power, throttle response, or mpg?

Also did you need to do any tuning? I'm worried about it running lean or something

I think all that is important is that it is in the airstream to get its readings so if the length of it changes I don't see where that should be an issue but are you sure the part numbers are the same? I believe it switched from 4 pin to 5 pin plugs at some point

I only did it because my 2000 Tacoma used the newer style

So in need be I could keep just one spare instead of 2 different styles.

I even tried to sell the old one for $25.00 on Yota Tech not a nibble

The plugs are the same just pinned different you need to match the new sensor to what your ECM needs to see.

Just did the repinning I changed everything Air Filter housing and the air intake tube to the throttle body

Because that big clunky old style MAF uses a completely different air intake .

With no way to mount the new style MAF although I do recall seeing something after market.

As for more power I can`t say because I was working through a very poorly done 3.4 swap

It works does not trip the MIL been about 1 1/2 years or longer

As long as things were good before this you should be fine if you had others issues they would also need addressed

Always wanted to know if it was possible. There has to be some gains. The older MAFs look like a huge choke point.

This is what I have found in the past, I'm about to take my TT Supra MAF (big and bulbus old-style) out and swap in a 2000 MAF when I get a chance.

I really don't remember it's been so long but have never had any issues. I'm converting over mainly to have easier access to parts and remove the bulbus middle part and replace
    it with more modern tech.

This is a helpful diagram. Has anyone else tried this or used this one with success? I saw that someone only had to swap one wire. Perhaps these wires are different even within their own year groups? My 97 air filter box busted and I'm looking at doing this as it might be easier and cheaper than finding a 97 airbox...

To be honest it’s hard to really understand what I’m lookin at on that lol ..hoping someone with an 03 3.4 can snap a pic of their normal maf sensor..the guy I got this truck from the pinned the original maf plug to work for the older less admired maf sensor(bullet)$880:(..took all that out and got the correct maf to convert it back to stock..

The 1995-1996 have a different programming ECU then the 1997-2004 ECU.
So for 1996 it might work for some but your trims might be out of wack.

The MAF housing has to be the same inside size across that came stock
because this is how the ECU knows the real amount of air traveling through
to know how to keep the AFR correct.

I posted this thread for the Volvo mod so you can get rid of the bullet type
MAF and you drop in the newer MAF sensor into the Volvo MAF.

I have the different photos and location wire colors shown but it seems Toyota changed then with different years.

It works great with my 1997 truck with probably 75,000 on this mod.

    Read through my link below
