I found this interesting article about Japanese engines. :)

So I believe JDM engines could be a pretty good deal. :)

I think I would check your local salvage yards and craigslist before outsourcing overseas. I also own a USDM 300zx twin turbo and according to the forums a lot of guys have had good luck with JDM engines for those cars. But the engine that is in that car is a rare find in the US used. The 3RZ is pretty common so I think I would try locally.

They import engines and transmissions all the time .
Maybe a last resort , but might be worth a look

It is true that Japanese engines are low mileage but since most trucks in Japan until 2005 were diesel, it is difficult to find 3RZ in Japan. They had Toyota 2L diesel engine in Japan. I did find a good source. There is a Japanese importer who actually supplies to 90% of small importers in USA. Their name is Engine World Inc in Houston, Tx. I bought a fully re-manufactued 4 port 2004 model coil pack 3RZ engine long block for just $1650 + core. There website is https://japaneseusedengines.net/manufacturer/toyota

I highly recommend them. I bought this engine last month and I am very happy with it.
