About to order a part. It says "extended cab". I only have heard of the 1st gen with rear jump seats as "xtra cab."

Yes, they are the same. Until the 2nd Gen came out there was no “access cab”. Now the term is used interchangeably.

Why Toyota changed the name is beyond me. Maybe because the 2nd Gen has actual doors. Which made “access” easier to the rear “seats”.
If you even consider them seats. I consider them a nice place for “stuff” other than people.

Here's 01, 05 and my new 22. Wish I had the xtracab on my 86 in my avatar photo but didn't want to wait to order one. Love the access doors.
Never have cared for the 4 door double cabs with tiny beds.

1st gen tacomas still referred to it as an xtra cab. The 'access' cab was introduced on the 2nd gens when they added the rear reverse facing 'access' doors.

Technically Toyota Inc calls it the 'Dlx' chassis....
    2005 and on - access cab......heavier body due to missing pillar..bigger eingine...2.7 or 3.5's..

A rare animal is to see one of the new Tundra 'access' cabs.....

It's actually not. You have the access cab, the 1st gens were extracabs (or xtracabs). The "access" is the suicide doors you have that 1st gens never had.

While this may not fully suffice as "proof", here you go:

    https://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-access-cab/2007/pickup-4d-6-ft/

    https://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-xtracab/2003/pickup-2d-6-ft/

I see all too often people calling the 1st gen Tacoma doublecabs a "crew cab" (or some other name) but those are names Toyota never used for those models. The Tundra has a crew cab, but that's specifically bigger than the Tundra doublecab. It's usually a ford/chevy guy who buys a Toyota and just uses whatever name they're familiar with.

The problem with the xtra cab vs. access cab thing is that the xtracab name has been around since the before times, so when the access cab came out 2ith the 2005 2nd gens, lots and lots of people kept using the xtracab name, because that's what it replaced. It's kinda like Kleenex or Xerox, it's just a name everyone uses because it's familiar, but it is (technically) wrong.

Now, maybe the euros or the aussies still have an extracab in the hilux, but I don't think so.

Link to a 2003 brochure, which mentions xtracab: http://www.russauto.com/ncinv/modelinfo/brochures/03Tacoma.pdf

One of these days I'll dig up the window sticker from mine and see what it says.

Edit: No need to rummage, someone else has already done it:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2003-tacoma-double-cab-trd-original-window-sticker.539024/

Different manufacturers use different terminology. Even the same manufacturers have changed terminology over time. Makes it confusing.

On the toyota parts deal website my access cab is called a "large cab" when searching for OEM parts.

You have a second gen so that's irrelevant to us. 1st gens don't have an access cab. All we have is the extra/xtra/extended cab.

That's a first for me. That's probably a translation issue.

Toyota.com calls it both an Extra Cab and an XTRACAB interestingly enough.

Wikipedia probably isn't as good of a source but it also concurs
