Are 2nd Gen V6 Tacomas by definition 4wd?

Looking to buy a Tacoma. There's one posted by an older lady I'm looking at and she says it is a 2014 with a V6 engine. I emailed and her daughter said it was a 2wd. Can such a think exist? Or are all V6 engine Tacomas 4wd? A V6 2wd seems wierd. Couldn't find an informative post and she's a few hours drive from us in a small town. Thank you!

There are more 4X2 Tacoma's with the V6 than 4X4's. A lot more. When I bought mine the dealer had about a dozen Pre-Runners, but no 4X4's. They had to go 150 miles to get the one I bought from another dealer. Granted this was at a smaller dealership. But they told me that they rarely get asked for a 4X4.

    Toyota calls it "PreRunner"

Basically the stance and appearance of a 4x4 truck, but with no front driveline.

5.5 lift front 4 rear on 33s with an endless amount more work to do
And then you can do mods to them like you would a 4x4 or you can get lift spindles that wouldn't work on a 4x4.

    if 4cyl means 2wd, and v6 means 4wd, I wonder if V8 is AWD?

Okay, then. I'm clearly a clueless noob, but since bigger must be better, I'll take the V8 with the 6wd.

    actually, I think it's exponential.
    2wd*2 = 4wd
    4wd*2 = 8wd

Be careful though, now you're getting into heavy duty driver's licenses and whatnot ;)

Can I fit a regression model to it? Regress @wd on @v-engine? Include covariates (e.g. age of driver). Perhaps it could predict the exact type of Tacoma we should buy?! .....Brings out my inner geek, of which there is plenty.

I hadn't realized that. Thanks for the info @Marshall R . Anyone know if Toyota publishes production numbers?

BTW, @huruta , I've been driving for close to 40 years, just saw my first Tacoma that had a "PRERUNNER" badge on the tailgate.....

Like most elderly Tacoma owners, it's likely she just debadged it. She prefers the cleaner look without all the unnecessary "4x4, Tacoma, V6 etc.." badging.

No shit, is this serious? Chevy and Ford don't make 2 wd v8s? Something smells a little fishy here....

an engine does not determine if a vehicle is 4wd or not. There is a transfer case that engages the 4wd on a vehicle, if you see 2 drive shafts come off of it then its probably 4wd.

More detail about your Tacoma needs will give you more suggestions as to models that would be a good fit. Are you concerned about travel in snow? Driving in mountains? Will you need to transport more than 2 people? Why do you want a Tacoma?

Hi All, Nothing fishy here. Just someone who doesn't know a lot about trucks. Of course I do know that a v4, v6 and 2x4, 4x4 are different components, I just didn't know how they go together in Tacomas or trucks more broadly.

The Tacoma is "replacing" the 1985 VW Westfalia camper van with 290k miles that we just sold. It had no A/C which was a deal breaker for the newest addition to our family, a Boston Terrier, who it turned out has extreme heat sensitivity. The VW was like a greenhouse and putting in A/C was cost prohibitive. We loved the van, and want something for outdoor adventures on the smaller side. We are considering putting on a Drifter pop-top camper. The wedge design is a lot like our camper van and it worked great for us with us sleeping upstairs and dogs downstairs. A Tacoma would give us greater functionality than our van. We do a good amount of hiking and fly-fishing and camp out several times a year, mostly local, but that was primarily because we didn't trust the van to go longer distances. We are also excited to get on trails and roads that have not been pliable in our 2wd, 33-year van. We are in Seattle and head up and over the mountains in the winter to see family in Eastern WA and the passes can get bad so something that would serve us well then would be useful. We want to buy once and cry once with a good used Tacoma. Here are our thoughts:

    • 4x4, v6 ideal (Husband requirements and non-neg. Wyoming boy dictates this)
    • Not sure if SR5, sport or off-road would be best
    • Not sure of access cab or 4 door cab ideal - only additional travelers to husband and self are our 75lb boxer and 25lb boston
    • reliable (prob. pretty easy, esp compared to our 33 y/o vanagon!)
    • enough life to last 10-15 years
    • enough life to warrant adding a 8k camper top to it
    • long bed since using it primarily for camping / outdoor fun and husband is 6'3"
    Opinions, thoughts, suggestions welcome!
