Where I live in Colorado and go to MOAB a lot and there is a lot of dust, snow and crap in the air and I was sick of cleaning out my air box every couple of months so a pre-filter seemed like the best solution. I have seen them used before on other trucks and my brother has one and swears by it so I decided to get one. So after a lot of searching I didn't find anyone that had done a pre-filter on their 2016+ Tacoma with an ARB Snorkel (SS172HP) so the research began.

The biggest problem was finding a pre-filter what worked with these ARB Snorkels is the intake size. This generation of snorkel they moved away from the 3 inch inlet size to a 4 inch (101.6mm). 3 inch seemed to be the standard and 4 inch is in a whole different category so there are not that many options out there. What I did find that fit the inlet size was a Donaldson H000858.

Now, measuring the CFM is a whole different problem. I am not trained in this and I'm sure someone will correct me but that is what the internet is for. I can only go off of what I find on the internet so using boosttown.com for a CFM calculator it looks like our trucks, with that pre-filter attached are rated at 277.8 CFM at 6000rpm and that filter is rated at 339.02 CFM.

Now that is not ideal for maximum filtering but it does get the job done on my truck and has filters a lot of crap out of the air. I will be the first to say that it is pretty big and not compact like others I have seen but it doesn't bother me and until someone makes one that fits our trucks better, it will do the job.

What do you mean cleaning my air box every couple of months . Do you mean to say it’s more worse dirt wise with the arb snorkel than with stock ? That’s something new to me. It’s contrary to what the manufacturer and some users are saying . Please elaborate.

Awesome! I did a ton of searching too but found nothing concrete about fitment. I found a pre-cleaner by Sy-klone but it was WAY too expensive.

What size did you get 7"?

Snorkels help in that it moves your intake away from the wheel well. You have hot engine air mixing around the wheel well which is kicking up dirt right next to your air intake which creates a negative pressure zone and sucks dirt into the intake. However, a snorkel is not immune to road dust and other debris.

yeah if anything my air filter gets dirtier way faster now with a snorkel than it did before...overall. BUT on a dusty trail, it actually stays cleaner. When you're out in the dirt, the wheel wells get filled with it and that's most of what is getting sucked into the air intake. The snorkel avoids that pulling air from higher up and not from a confined space. Also, cooler air intake temps with the snorkel. Important for ping-happy boosted motors especially

How expensive is WAY expensive? I’ve never bought a precleaner before, so I don’t know what’s considered expensive.

You can get a Sy-Klone model 9001 for ~$170 from here. The best price I found was $143, but I can’t remember which website it was.

    Anything over $50 :)

I paid $250 for my Snorkel so I can't justify $170 for a cheap plastic precleaner.

To elaborate, durning everyday driving, my air box is fine because I am on clean roads (mostly). BUT I do still get dust, dirt, etc when I go to MOAB especially. The snorkel is MUCH better than the wheel well intake for sure but it's not completely clean.

    +1 to JoeCOVA and eon_blue

I need in on this $250 snorkel deal. Looks like they’ve jumped up to $300. Still way less than ARB. Maybe one day they’ll be back in stock...

For me, the Pre-Filter was $65 from dieselequipmentinc.com and it is really good quality.

Ya ARB pricing just made me throw up. So expensive.

I found it irritating that the snorkel was more expensive than my twin compressor ($450 on GB).

    Did you get the H000858?
    What is your inlet size?
    Mine is 3.5
See that H000858 is 4” hoping it will still work?
