They suck, don’t buy them. I only got my money back cause I filed a claim against them on my credit card.

Wish there was a carplay dongle that had good and consistent functionality. I have not read any good feedback on any model\brand dongle.

The wireless adapter in my Joying works rather well.

I'm a dumb apathetic gen-x'r so I don't get computer things like millennials but answer me this: why cant our OEM/Entune head units not be able to have carplay downloaded to them? they are just computers afterall...

Not all processors are the same or compatible with different operating systems. Since Android Auto isn’t bothering, probably doesn’t play nice with CarPlay either.

many head units have both android and carplay though
my understanding of it is that it is an app, which is why many aftermarket units have both android and carplay on them...

My understanding from the little I have look into it is that it is all run through your phone, so if a new CarPlay version comes out, it updates when you update your phone. The headunit acts as a dumb screen. The headunits may just not be compatible to be able to act in this manner/have the hardware required.

Edit: And I think these wireless carplay adapters are actually running a version of Android to act as a go between to make the screen think it is wired to the phone. It's a very weird and buggy setup.

I think I follow. The head unit screen is just a GUI relay for whats going on with your phone, and the unit has to support THAT software? There are probably dealer, sales and end user agreements and other reasons you cant just DL carplay to your car too. I know it must be messy or it would be as ubiquitous as iphones already are.

It's built in to the head unit.

I think the requirement is also that you have to have CarPlay already. The head unit sees the dongle and thinks it’s your phone connected. The phone sees the dongle and connects to it.

Very few Auto manufactures pay the licensing fee for wireless to Apple. BMW is one of them.
