I want to do a simple project. A rail that goes between the bed rails that I can hook up rear facing aux lights on. How exactly should I do this? Square pipe and what to use on the rails? I don't want to weld it to the rails, but to weld the pipe to a piece to connect on the rails. Like slide the whole thing into the rails.

Alright, I can try that. Like I've said before, I'm new to all of this. What metal should I get, where to get it, how much would something like I need cost?

Looks like 2" angle, 1"x2" square tube and 1" or 2" round tube. The Highlift mount looks like flat bar, maybe 2". The tire mount looks like 1/8" plate cut into a circle with threaded rod and some kind of handle/bolt thingy.

You won't find this at Lowe's or Home Depot. Not sure where you live but maybe search for a tube supply place? Or Tractor Supply. If you can't find a supply house, call your local welding supply, they might be able to help locate a place.

Prices depend on where you're able to find stuff and the amount of material is something you'll need to figure out.

Looks like a great project. Good luck!

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
Seeing how this is a welding thread lets talk arc transfer. With the powder coating of a lot of my products we have been trying to get the smoothest welds possible (I know in a fab word short arc is the norm) but are any of you guys with the big welders running beads in Spray transfer? We have been toying around with different gasses, power & wire speeds to get the perfect lay flat bead.

Most of the stuff we do is short arc but we had a rep and certified welding instructor from Praxair come to the shop and give us a few bottles of a Tri mix gas to see how we like Spray transfer. Oh yeah we got 2 381cf bottles for FREE hell yeah I'm trying it! It's called StarGone it's a 90% Argon 8% C02 2%O2 and they are getting awesome penetration with robotic welding with this gas. It's really great in short arc and spray it's clean and it burns deep for a good strong weld.

Note this method is used in large industral fabrication and robotic welding for the most part most fabricators will never get into spray transfer.

i liked this setting with this gas the bead was pretty flat with minimal splatter with good penetration.

All in all the short arc transfer is nicer on the eyes (until you get into powder coating) but the spray produces a nice deep weld that lays flat. We do most of our welding in short arc but when we get into the powder coated parts we might start leaning towards spray more for that nice flat look.

    Great post Jerry! +1

Iv never been able to try out spray welding, just short arc with mig. As fas as clean and good penetrated welds, I prefer either push/pulling running circles ususlly always give me nice beads. If I weave I usually try to push as apposed to pull but not every weld is the same and some are better off pulled.

As for going with just a smooth weld for good powder coat cover, just cranking the heat up and pushing a straight steady bead is hard t beat. On multi pass welds the root weld is always a hot straight pass thats burns in deep. With all your machining it also wouldnt be hard or a bad idea on certain things to throw a bevel on it, would allow you to get a great penetration and verly little "weld" to be seen.

I was just reading about StarGone (what a name, like my star is gone? wtf?) the other day. Sounded interesting but didn't see any cost comparison. Did you hear about that? I liked that it seems to give you better penetration which, for some of the stuff you make, makes a lot of sense. I'm also curious what your opinion will be come the end of the first bottle (weld quality, etc).

Never tried spray transfer. My first exposure to it was reading about it in the Miller app. Like you mentioned, Miller recommends it mostly for the flat, horizontal welds. I do like the finished look and I'm guessing that for you, it also means less work to cleanup prior to PC?

Thanks for posting up. Always good to learn new stuff!

Would I be able to weld a flowmaster exhaust on with a Harbor Freight 90 Amp flux core welder? My neighbor has one and I got an $11 exhaust I want to try out.

Yeah circles is my method of choice in short arc. In spray you can over burn the material quick so you have to move fast. We do Bevel the edge of just about all the weld joints we weld.

so far we are loving the gas As for cost i get great rates on gasses so im not worried about that. We wont be done with this gas for about a month and we have 2 more full bottles so i dont see us buying more until around Christmas.
