I'm thinking about a black wrap on my hood and roof instead of repainting. Anyone gone this route? Pros/cons?

I wrapped my hood and my roof for additional protection from my activities and elements. At first I did matte black on my roof, but changed it to a dark metallic blue that matches my paint. Little bit less heat. The only thing to be mindful of is the life of the wrap. Example, 3M's warranty varies depending where you are at (and the sun's intensity). For Hawaii, it's 1 year on horizontal surfaces. I left mine on for 15 months and the wrap was still good actually. The wraps have worked well for me.

Yeah, I am in Phoenix so the durability of the wrap is going to be an issue. I've heard some people say they will hold up for years and might fade a bit but will be fine and others say you get 1-2 years max.

I’m thinking about doing the same thing. My roof is beginning to peel slightly and Either a wrap or cutting and clearing the roof is in the future.

In the same boat as you guys. My roof is fading bad from the heat. Thinking a wrap is the way to go. I’m curious if the roughness from the paint fading will show under the wrap?

I think it's still worthwhile trying to wrap if painting is not your option at the moment. I have a small area on my roof that's fading and the wrap has basically stopped it. I was somewhat concerned how the paint fares under a black wrap, in the sun. But my roof was great after I removed the vinyl (and replaced it) and it was just how I saw it last.

My recommendation is not to leave the wrap on for too long. In your case, maybe change it out no later than 18 months. I understand that a wrap left on too long can create a problem removing them, and maybe even leave a residue. In my case, after 15 months, it was still a breeze to take off.

You might also want to consider a different color for your roof. No one even noticed I had a black wrap on my roof until I told them. The dark metallic blue wrap I have now doesn't exactly match my paint, but of course no one noticed and people really had to look to to see. Point being, you might be able to reflect more heat with a different color than black. I didn't notice in the cab. Just on the roof surface. In the past I used Fellers and Amazon for my wrap sources.

I think it'll depend on the roughness, so it's possible the texture could be seen through. The wrap might make it less noticeable if anything depending if you get a matte or gloss finish. Either way, you won't really see your roof anyway.

2020-06-04 15.27.48.jpg I wrapped the hood of my 2008 White Tacoma to cut down the glare from the sun bouncing of the hood. I had it installed just over a year ago, and it is holding up well. I went with a matte gray color.
If I did it again I would look for a flat gray color. The matte finish seems to hold more dirt and dust but cleans out when the truck is washed.

I used Apex Customs in Tempe AZ.

No but I would wrap the roof white because that's the only color it should be

am curious to know what that would cost both to wrap or paint

What was the cost for the hood to be wrapped?

No money, all went to truck...
My question is this: Do imperfections in paint show through the wrap? if your clear coat is cracking and peeling, will it show through the wrap? Is sanding required before wrapping?

I think they would unless some prep work is done to correct it. I would talk with a rep that is doing the work to figure out the details.
