Hey guys, I am pretty new around here. I recently picked up a 2014 TRD double cab 4X4 and I am looking to lose the chrome bumper. I would love to buy a new black one but it does not seem that easy to get. I have read that some have sprayed theirs with bedliner material and it sounds like it is the best permanent solution.

I already plan on picking up a color matched grill surround so that will be sweet, now I just need to take care of the bumper. Camelback Toyota seems like a great resource but they don't have bumpers.

Anyone have this done or able to do such a project? If you can even point me in the right direction to get this done I would really appreciate it.

I live in Chandler off of Gilbert and Ocotillo so if you see a white TRD SBDC cruising around, it just might be me.

    Thanks!

I didn't do it to my tacoma, but had a jeep years ago and sprayed it with some rattle can liner, it was ok, durable and the extra traction was nice. Unfortunately it always seemed dirty, like the beeline sucked up the dirt. Maybe other had a different experience

I didn't use the spray on, but Herculiner (spelled right?). Got it in a gallon paint bucket at Walmart and used a roller to put it on. It has held up pretty well, the plastic top covers bit into it in a couple spots. Being that it does not have the UV protection that spray on stuff has, it has faded and could use a couple more coats.
I also used it on my front bumper and chrome mirrors.

I shot some of the rustoleum spray on bedliner on my rear bumper, even after roughing it up with a sander it is coming off. You'd want to sandblast it first to get it to adhere well.

Or if you really want to do it right, just pull it and get it powder coated. It's not as expensive as you might imagine.

I took mine off my truck, removed all the plastic, sanded the crap out of it with 80 grit, cleaned with acetone, primed it, and used spray on bedliner. That was a couple years ago, and it's as good today as the day I did it. Did my decals at the same time too.

So happy that I did it too, I hate chrome.

Well guys, I plasti diped my rear bumper and front grill surround yesterday, peeled it off this morning. It actually turned out pretty well, but I just did not like the look. I did leave my toyota symbol dipped and it looks great.

I guess I am a chome bumper kinda guy, because I just did not like the black.

Thanks for all the advice, great forum.

Glad you worked it out. I'm thinking of raptor lining my new bumper, but maybe also my fender flares (black plastic base model). Anyone ever rhino/linex/raptor lined plastic? Thoughts on how it might hold up? It would be cheaper than powder coating my bumper, and if I could do my flares too that would be sweet. Other recommendations?

Whenever I get fiberglass body kits for imports I take them to have the backs rhino lined. Makes them hold up to some serious abuse (like when rocks kick up into the fenders).

I'd assume it works great on plastic parts as well.

    enough to go over stuff
I did before I got my aftermarket bumper. I took off the bumper then removed all the plastic. Then I scratched up the chrome and used etching primer. Then I used rustolum spray on bedliner. There are more pictures of the bumper in my build.
