Im not looking to spray my bed.

I just just picked up a set of silver tube steps and they are a little beat up, plus I want to paint them black.

I'm trying to think of something rugged, but also something that will hide imperfections if I don't sand them down perfect.

Saw rattle cans of rustoleum spray bed liner, and im thinking of giving it a shot.

Seems like the hurculiner is popular on other forums but its a little pricey compared to the rustoleum

Do you guys think it will hold up? Anyone want to recommend something else ?

    thanks

I've used it on a few projects.
It is not durable at all... it won't hold up on the steps.
It was designed at a "filler" for spots where you are unable to roll Herculiner, and for hiding chips.

It did work very well to give me a nice "dashboard" texture on the inside of the fairing on my motorcycle.

I agree, don't paint steps with it, it doesn't hold up to anything being thrown off the front tires. I also painted my sliders with it and it hasn't even held up for 6 months.

I painted the steel frame of my DIY entertainment center with it and the entire top front edge of the piece crossing over the TV framing the component shelf is all chipped up.

Mine are peppered with rock chips from the winter. The salt and sand used on the roads put tons of big ass chips in the bedliner. I will coat them with something much more durable this summer. I also have not made any trail runs and they're showing a lot of wear. Mud flaps are still on the truck even!

Thanks for the honest input guys.

So my question is, what should I try ?

the roll on rustoleum bed liner better?

Or should I pay the extra $ for roll on hurculiner which seems to have alot of good reviews ?

on a tight budget guys just cant afford to have them done professionally as much as Id want to.
I'd love to powdercoat them but due to their size its really expensive.

My next question is stripping the silver from the OEM bars, I was going to use a DA sander, but would a chemical stripper work ?

Scuff them up real good i did my rear bumper and its held up good and i back into bushes and brush all the time on my property. It all comes down to prep work if you don't give it a good surface to stick to it's going to chip and peel off. Dupli color makes some good bedliner spray too that seems a little rubbery then the rustoleum.

    nothing cool
this may not be the answer you want but how bout just pick up some OEM Black Tube steps? there's plenty of members on here wanting to get rid of them and get sliders or something else. I have the black tube steps on my truck and they've held up just fine. they aren't sliders, but i drive only on highways and a few dirt roads

The Duplicolor is supposed to be good stuff but I can't remember what it's called. They made a bed coating and an bed armor, I believe the bed armor is more durable but I have not personally used either one.

I sprayed my front bumper, back bumper, and sliders with it and its held up well. I've had no chips in the back bumper surprisingly. The front bumper gets chipped occasionally and very surprising, the sliders have held up the best. There are scratches on the sliders where my leg rubs on it but they aren't bad. For me, the point of spray painting all my armor is that its gonna get scratched up no matter what and I can just touch it up with more spray paint. Plus it does have a real nice rugged texture to it

I've been looking for used steps for months . Plenty of members sell them but they are always on the other side of the country . Found these on my local Craigslist and the price was fair even though its not the color I wanted .

I'm set in stone on painting these just trying to figure out the best way to do it without paying a arm and a leg .

I used it on my wife's 98 4runner with chrome bumpers. I sanded some of the chrome off and then sprayed the bumpers. It has held up pretty good for a few years now.

the problem painting the are the step pads. you can not remove them without tearing them up. i painted my silver steps, the end pads come off but could pry the pads off. ended up taking some coated wire and ran around pads to lift up to get paint under them
