If I had money to piss away, I'd look at installing a turbo charger on my Taco.

The V6 is very underpowered. I've really become amazed at how much of a dog this truck is. I have always been used to beast engines though so part of it is me being spoiled with my Super Duty.

I hear a lot about superchargers for the Tacoma but not so much on Turbos. Why not?

Oh and if I had bagillions to piss away this thing needs like an 8-speed transmission. Or maybe 10-speed? :burnrubber:Would be a fun race truck build.

Under powered? I have to watch my foot or the back end breaks free all the time. I'm running E rated 265s and I can burn them off the rim with ease. I smoke V8 trucks off the line with ease. I'm not sure you can call these under powered. They have far more HP than the 78 Corvette L82 and far more HP than the 86 Iroc-Z.

    Are you being sarcastic?
I got a eagle talon awd with t-55 turbo, fuel rails, full borla exhaust ect... fast as hell
But turbo lag is when your at the beginning of each gear you have NO psi=NO extra power...then at 3rpms all 12 psi hits and drives you into your seat. it eats most stock v8's. now a buddy has a Mustang cobra supercharged and he has full power all the time.
So yea turbo lag SUCKS but turbos are more affordable...and tougher to time correctly.

Tires spinning is a product of no weight in the rear and not having a limited slip diff. I wouldn't say its because of insane HP.

This truck weighs like 3 times what those cars weigh lol. Compared to a little car I guess its fine, but compared to trucks ehh.

The truck gets too high in rpms between gears and puts tremendous effort to get to the next gear. It lags in getting power. Plus I don't like having to floor the truck at highway speeds to get it to do anything to get out of overdrive (when going 70+ mph).

Trans and engine issue. Turbo would help.

I think the truck would benefit greatly from a more instantaneous power source rather than needing to unnecessarly dump gas to get where it needs to be.

i must say that i think the trucks gears are lacking in the ratio department, however i am perfectly happy with the power in the truck it is a midsize truck after all. I dont see the dollars to donuts on installing a supercharger. However i have not looked into a turbo and what it would cost overall installing myself obviously.

Unless you're installing a massive turbo, you're really not going to notice any lag. Second there's nowhere good to mount a turbo on these trucks that doesn't expose it to the elements. Stick the the SC, and if you want to get pinned to your seat, buy a lotus to sling corners with.

coming from a crew cab 4x4 silverado with the 5.3 v8.....my 09 tacoma DCLB would spank it off the line. Rolling start and flooring it, would be fairly even. My dad has an 05 dakota crew cab short bed with the 4.7. The silverado would maybe be half a truck ahead up to 80 mph. My tacoma annihilates his dakota by multiple truck lengths. Silverados are notorious for have to continuously downshift around 70 mph unless your on completely flat highway. I have been very impressed by the tacoma 4.0 and auto trans. Can easily break the rear end loose on dry pavement. My silverado? better put some water or a couple quarts of oil down for that to happen....

Supercharger here and it has all the power I'll ever want, next week I'll have the 2.85 pulley installed. I think I'm going to be afraid to floor it for a while.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
I'm not sure how that avoided the turbo lag, but my '07 Saturn Sky Redline did not exhibit any turbo lag. You press down, you got thrown back into seat. Had a buddy that used to drive a 911 turbo, and he drove my Sky, and couldn't believe the lack of lag.

So it is possible... Just Saying...

Turbos make big hp #'s , it's not uncommon now to see 2500hp plus on a turbo'd sbc with twin 88's

Wow full boost at 3 rpms, that's amazing. So you don't have turbo lag then huh?

If you size the turbo correctly you will reduce turbo lag. Superchargers are nice but they also rob some hp to make hp. Personally i think a smallish twin scroll turbo on this engine would awesome, it would give you that extra hp and tq you seem to think its lacking.
