Anyone tried 12volt.solutions' remote start WITH push button takeover?

Since buying by 2020 Tacoma some years ago, I've wanted a remote start, but hadn't bought one until now since takeover was not possible with push button start models. Every manufacturer I've looked into confirms that it's a Toyota design limitation and there's no way around the engine stopping and needing to restart when you get in.

Flash forward and this company has supposedly found a workaround and is selling a remote start kit that has a takeover for push button ignition models. I got super excited and bought it, but have had problems getting it to work right despite all the wiring and programming being successful. Failure symptoms I'm seeing are that the truck remotely starts and I can get in it and go (takeover works) BUT only if I immediately go get in. If I remote start and let it sit, the truck will turn off in about a minute or two before restarting itself and repeating (it will do this twice before it stays off).

I've worked with their support team to replace the hardware, verify programming, but the problem continues. They say they've had other customer(s?) with the same problem. Has anyone here tried this remote start?

Don't all Tacomas with a fob have remote start built in stock?

Nope I thought the same thing. I was told my truck had it when I bought it but the salesman lied (what a shock) but when I pressed the issue the dealer looked ip my bin and said it doesn’t have it. I said I thought they all had it and it just needed to be turned on. I looked up my vin to verify and it’s true.

I have it in my 17. I have had it in my truck for a month now with no issues whatsoever. Works perfectly. They are also running a BF sale now. Totally plug and play.

Wait... the ONLY 100% plug n play kit? What about N2 Designs?

Which one of these companies came out with this kit first?

I’m pretty sure N2 is identical to the 12 Volt.

I went with Start X. Plug in play, easy install, took about 15 min. Installed one in my wife’s Jeep over a year ago, no issues. Just now doing mine because winter is coming.

I’ve had it since they came out, no issues at all, and I absolutely love that it stays on while getting my kids in the car when it’s 120 outside.

Had the remote start x before this and had no issues either, only switched to get the remote takeover.

Many do. Mine did, but I lost that ability after I opted out of Tacoma snooping DCM.

So to those following this thread, I got my answer. It looks like 12volt might have been the first to offer push-button with takeover, but they must not have tested the unit with TRD trims during development. It turned out the TRD models have some conflict between Toyota DCM and the starter module with the standard wiring harness. Removing the DCM fuse to disable that system fixed the remote start problems I was having. I spoke to 12volt (they're actually pretty great to work with on this!) and they confirmed that they recently discovered this with the TRD's post-release, but that they have a new wiring harness that fixes the DCM conflicts on TRDs they're sending out now. Once I get that, I should be able to swap harnesses and then safely add the DCM fuse back in without breaking the starter (right now I lose bluetooth and my microphone for voice commands with it out).

I did reach out to N2 about their starter since they appear to have since also started advertising they can now do push button takeover with their starters too and I was about to return my 12VoltSolutions starter to try theirs if 12Volt hadn't figured this out. One thing to keep in mind about N2's starter solution is that they do not offer long range fob support yet like 12Volt does, but a rep did confirm that's coming.

I have N2s new RS with take over. All plug and play, no issues and a few other features I like that idk if 12Volt has them or not. My factory remote works great seems like I have more distance than before with N@s old system. I don't use the app for the phone as I have no need for it but I get maybe 50 yards which is good with the remote plus Jimmy at N2 is great to deal with.

I’d love to buy one of these to replace my non-takeover N2 kit once I actually see pictures of the harnesses and kit that aren’t generic or edited. Just so I know what I’m getting into. Last I checked, three different brands had PTS takeover kits available but not one pic or video of harness or install. Really looking forward to the upgrade if it actually functions and installs without issue.

The N@ unit is so simple, 3 plugs and a quick step by step programing step. It took only a few minutes and it took longer to remove some panels than the set up!

Just installed mine from 12v. Physical installation was a breeze. Video was easy to follow. Mobile app receiver was easy enough, but the orientation was confusing at first. The instructions say the door needs to be "up" as shown in the diagram, which leads you to believe that means the device needs to sit vertical from the way the image is, but they mean sitting on a flat surface. Setting up the app SHOULD have been a breeze, but it wasn't.

Tried to set up the app, went through all the questions but it wouldn't talk to the truck. I was assuming it uses the Verizon network because I get piss poor Verizon coverage at my house, so I went to town to try again. This time it appeared to connect right away, but this time it didn't ask the same questions like what protocol. So I tried to start over but the app has some poor programming and design and editing features weren't working. I couldn't remove the truck or device, I couldn't edit the protocol, I couldn't even remove my account. I ended up having to submit a support ticket. This is where I'll give credit where due, because even for being 8pm on the Friday after Thanksgiving they went into my account and changed the protocol right away and I had it working within 30 minutes.

Now that everything is set up and working, it works great. Send a start command to the truck and within a minute it fires right up (except at home because of shit network coverage, so there I just use the fob).

Did you need to cut any wires? Website says
    • 100% Plug & Play if vehicle is equipped with SOS button
    • 1 wire will need to be interrupted if no SOS button is present

I have the SOS button, but I opted out of Toyota's tracking. Button is not illuminated.

Lookig at 12V abd N2design kits with long range remotes. 12v Remote is one way, N2 is 2 way, but N2 is cheaper.

Nope, it was all plug-n-play. I too have SOS, but my DCM died so I did the speaker bypass and unplugged the DCM which completely disables the SOS. No issues from that.

I didn't do the long range remotes. I figure with the app I shouldn't need them, and if the app isn't working then I'll just suck it up and get close enough for the factory fob. My only "concern" is losing the app ability when 4G networks go away. Not sure how long before that will happen.

I am too cheap to pay for the app annually :anonymous:. There are several layers of concrete between my truck and my office, so factory remote does not always work.

When I upgraded to N2s new take over I noticed my remote has a lot more distance than with the old unit, idk why but its even better now.

What is everyone doing with the module(s)? Are you leaving them hanging back there or attaching them somewhere with double sided tape or zip ties? The cellular module says "this side down" on the back, so I'd like to make sure it stays that way for the best reception.
