Anyone towed their DCLB with a U-haul, penske, budget trailer?

    Hey guys,

The double cab long bed wheelbase is 140" according to toyotas site which is longer than the "max" allowed with uhaul, penske or budget car haulers. Has anyone successfully put their DCLB on one of these? I don't know how conservative their max length measurements are or if there is no way the truck would fit.

    Thanks

Max length? Seems like an odd dimension to even consider when towing. I have a DCLB and I have towed a 25ft camper/18ft box trailer (5,500 lbs) and a 14ft boat. The 25ft camper has logger 4,000 miles behind my Tacoma. It tows great but, make sure you have a 7-way harness and a brake controller.

When it comes to tow vehicles the longer the wheel base the better. Your actions with the steering wheel will have lesser effect on the trailer and provide more stability.

Is hat the type of trailer that drags the rear tires of the truck?

I think he is talking about putting his truck ON a trailer.

I have used them a few times, but never with a truck on it. All I have towed was small cars, I never had any issues. One of them had chains/straps built into the trailer to tie down the vehicle. Those tie down points were NOT moveable. So if the wheel base was to long the tie downs wouldn't work.

    Hey guys,

Sorry, yes, I am talking about putting my tacoma on the penske trailer and towing it behind a moving truck.

My concern is that my tacoma wheel base is too long for their trailers. I'm just trying to see if I can still squeeze it on, even if it's not technically the right size to fit.

I actually own 3 Budget Truck Rental dealerships....

You won't get a DC long bed on a U-Haul or Penske trailer. You won't get it on most Budget trailers... However, Budget does have a few tilt back style trailers that your truck will technically fit on. However, Budget will stay say it won't work. What you are looking for is called an ACC trailer from Budget. They are a flat bed style with a large rear gate on them... you will know if if you see it.

If you can find one of those trailers from Budget and just tell them you are towing a camry or something you could get away with it.

Alternative is you could rent a tow dolly and take the drive shaft loose. DO NOT try to tow on a dolly with the rear wheels on the dolly.

Also, I will deny this post should Budget ever ask...lol

Thanks for the help Luke. I know exactly the trailer you are talking w/the flip up gate. I'll have to call Penske and make sure they are okay with me towing a budget trailer behind their truck. What sucks is I have a beautiful 18' car hauler but don't want to risk the liability of towing my own trailer behind the Penske truck as apparently it's a big no no. Last resort I'll use a dolly w/the front tires on it. I just have never towed a dolly and worry it'll whip side to side. I also fear that with a dolly I won't know "what's going on back there" for example, if I had a flat on the dolly or taco, I wouldn't know.

Unfortunately Penske will likely say no to the trailer... and Budget will say no to the trailer being towed by Penske... in fact Budget and Penske don't typically rent a trailer to customers who don't have a truck rental as well.

Any particular reason you aren't renting a Budget truck to go with the Budget trailer?

Won't fit on a U-haul, I'll guarantee you that. My truck (DCSB) fit on a U-haul with 4'' to spare (and that's the wheels, not the body; body was hanging off the end of the trailer).

They also won't rent to you unless the towing vehicle weighs more than the trailer + your truck, which is going to be hard to find. We told them it was for a Rav4 and towed with an F150.

Yes it can be done with U-Haul. I just towed my Tacoma from Wichita Falls, TX to Amarillo, TX last weekend - 250 miles with no worries. I have 17 inch wheels and had to let air out on front tires to allow the strap to engage. Extra chains on back axle to secure. Didn't shift or even bounce.

I was driving a 20' U-Haul and I think you would need to tow with a similar sized vehicle. There is a transporter that is longer than the one I got. You can verify your setup thru U-Haul website, just pick a similar sized truck with the auto transport and put in your towed vehicle info. They do one way rentals without the need to rent the truck from them (good if you are getting Penske or other).

Drive smart and check the tie downs after 20 or so miles if you are on the highway.

Good luck I looked into towing my truck when I moved from San Diego to OKC but te DCLB is too long for the trailers they and the wheel size is too big for the straps on the dolly.

How much tag did you have left on the wheel straps? I have 33's, think they'll fit around?
