Anyone running Toyo open country RT trails? The XL version

    Downsizing from 33s and these 275/70R17s are the lightest 32s I could find at around 47lbs. They’re also some of the only non-E or C range 32s I could find

    just looking to see if anyone’s running them and how they feel on the road.

    I'm running 285/75/16 E Dura-Tracs. Wanted to lighten the load a bit so I just bought a set of Black Rhino wheels in 17". Was planning on running 285/70/17 C or SL Toyo Open Country R/T Trails. Ran into a buddy that had a set of 275/70/17's on his Sprinter. Got me to thinking I could drop even more weight going with the 275 but not sure if they'll look too small. The 275 is about an inch shorter and narrower than the 285. I did find a Thread on the 275's with lots of pictures but in the end I think 285 still looks better. Decisions, decisions!

    I was going to go with LT275/70/17 Open Country AT3 but after seeing these 275/70/17 XL rated Open Country R/T Trails, I'm leaning toward them instead. Toyo lists their weight at only 42 lbs per tire. The only drawback is that the tread is 13.6/32 compared to 16.4/32 for E rated. I doubt 3/13 is that noticable in terms of appearance. How does the handling and road noise of the RT Trail compare to the AT3?

    I bought 285/70/17. Mounted them on 17x8.5 0- off set Black Rhinos. I have had them balanced 4 times since I got them July 13th '24. Also found out one of the new wheels is bent, currently working on a replacement.They are C load instead of E which my Dura-tracs were. Noticeable acceleration gains and fuel mileage is better. Noise is not bad. Better then dura Trac but they only have 800 miles on them. I haven't had time to hit highway speeds since yesterdays rebalance. If the still shake my steering wheel I'm getting rid of them. They look great but if they don't run Tru they are worthless.

    I think the c rated is actually 31.65” while the e is 32.2”

    I just got a set of at3s 285/70/17 in C load 55lbs because the at3 in SL has Non existent sidewall lugs. They are Smooth and they look good. I’m starting to wonder if I should have gotten the RT Trails, just found out they come in SL 49lbs and the weight capacity is the same as the at3 in C and i believe the sidewall on every load of the trails is the same in appearance. My off road is less than 10% of the time. Mainly local / highway. Both look good but RT trails have a meatier sidewalk appearance.

    The 3s drive so smoothly compared to the ridgegrapplers I just had and I’m assuming will be better in the rain / snow. I also think the LT version of the at3s looks solid, just not As appealing to me as the RTs. Reason I initially went w the at3s is because I’m in the north east and we do get snow a few times a year.

    Hard to determine which trade off. Weight savings and the more MT look which I like or the heavier better road tire? Either way I’m kinda committed now, I just mounted and balanced the dam things this week.

    Yea I’m reading it’s not bad just that the AT3 is a superior road / highway / snow tire to the trail. The trial is definitely better in the mud, rock, etc.

    I’m sure I wouldn’t be unhappy w the trail on the road. Just more or less talking out loud voicing my dilemma. When I initially looked up the trail they were ALL heavier than the other at3 models. At 55lbs for the 3 I was already exceeding my desired Lbs, I got the at3 in SL to start at 46lbs but the sidewall was different than the LT versions so I swapped out once I noticed. Didn’t even know they had the trial in an SL. That’s similar to the ridgegrappler in SL I had at 48lbs, I just hated the ridge grappler it was bad in the rain/snow and was loud as hell on the highway imho.

    Yea I saw this
    yea I saw this as well, I’m just fussing. If I would have found the trial in SL at 49lbs I would have considered it. But it is what it is. I do like the at3s a lot and so far i actually think they look better with my rays TE37XT wheels than the trials would. I’ve seen some pics of them w rays and I think the at3s just accent the wheel nicely, it’s clean.

    These look awesome. I'm getting ready to buy a set of 275/70r17 and am torn between xl rated RT Trails, e rated AT3, or e rated BFG KO3. I'm leaning toward the RT Trails based on the cost and weight savings, $50 less per tire is very compelling. I just don't think they will handle wet roads as well or ride as smooth/ quiet as the AT3 and KO3. Decisions, decisions.

    I’m in the same boat as some of these guys. Do you have any more pictures of the tires? The sidewalls actually look pretty good from the angle of your photos.

    Used to have the Toyo at3 loved the ride and stopping distance both rain and dry roads . Never got a chance to try them in the snow . Off road they gripped well . Only downside side was the noise on the highway . Ended up replacing them with bfg .

    No experience running the trails, but the at3s are smooth. Maybe look at your wheel and tire set up. Try and visualize what set up would look better and just go with that.

    There may be a little trade off either way you go. For me I’m Hardly off road, and the at3 in C (though heavier 55 than then the rt trail SL 49) seems like to have a clear advantage on road and i honestly thought that they matched my rays wheels perfectly. Gave it a real clean look, it all flows. I can’t comment on trail noise but so far driving in town the at3 is shhhhhhh. I’m coming off the ridgegrappler which Now I’m looking back thinking it was dam loud. A definite audible hum at 50 and above even in town and on the highway forget it. The ridge is a hybrid to I believe so part of me thought the rt trail would possibly have the same / similar characteristics. So I’m keeping my ATs

    I ended up buying the BFG KO3. Discount Tire had 275/70 in stock and with warranty credits on my Cooper Rugged Treks and a $80 rebate, I was able to get them for $1,182 out the door. I have an appointment to get them installed tomorrow afternoon. Will try to remember to post my feedback on them after putting them to the test.
