Anyone running a LT245/75-17 ??

    I'm thinking about getting a LT245/75-17 instead of the LT265/70-17 so that I am getting a little extra height over stock (0.91") but also going a little thinner (0.79") to offset the loss in MPG (less rubber on the road for less resistance).

    Anyone have any experience in this size??

    I want a tougher tire to avoid flats when off road mostly, and for the odd time i pull a trailer.

    I think those are an E load range tire aren't they? If so they will beat you to death in a truck as light as a Tacoma.

    A lot of people make that comment. Am I totally underestimating P rated tires???

    I just assume that if I am spinning on or against a sharp rock they're going to get shredded and leave me stranded. Aren't 10 ply tires way more durable and less likely to receive punctures?

    If I used it strictly for city/hwy driving I would stick to the P rated rubber but I want something strong enough to take a little abuse.

    I guess ride quality is subjective. I had E range tires on my 07 and it rode pretty darn rough. The rear end bounced around a lot.
    There was a big difference going from stock P rated tires to a C load range on my 12. Partly it was because of them being mud tires, but in part it was due to the stiffer side walls.

    You have a shell right? Maybe that helps. Do you usually have weight in your bed as well?

    Just not unbearably stiff like a lot ( not pointing at you ) of people tend to suggest

    It depends on the terrain that you are driving in when you are offroad. I've never had an issue with P rated tires. I ran them on my 05 and for a year on my 12. I'm offroad weekly during hunting season, but its washed out fire trails and logging roads. The trails are rough but there aren't many rocks at all.

    Mostly the same terrain I go on... nothing wild, thus the Michelins. We have a lot of sharp rocks though. Broken shale and that kind of stuff. Even on the highways after little rock slides which are very common.

    As far as I understand, a C rated tire has the same sidewall as a E rated version of the same tire - only difference is layers in the bottom (tread area).

    Yes, as far as I know that's correct. I've never run the Michelan tires, they may ride better being a lighter and less aggressive tire. My E range tires were Mickey Thompson ATZs. They did ride quite a bit rougher than my C range Trail Grapplers.

    from your link at tire rack, the 265/75/17 load range C is 6 lbs. lighter 2/10" taller. that is the size fits your criteria better. LT tire in a C range is as heavy as I would go on a Tacoma. unsprung weight makes a big difference, your braking will suffer. I have lost up to 1.5 mpg by just putting a LT in load range D or E in same size a factory. I run LT275/70/17 in a Goodyear load range C to get tallest tire that fits the factory rim width. I don't do any serious off roading with these tires, ran a set of mud tires in 16's for off road.

    Actually the michelin 10 ply in the size I'm looking at (245/75-17) is only one pound heavier than the 6 ply good year in a 265/70-17, and is going to give way better mileage due to the tread pattern.

    I have looked at doing the michelin in a p rated tire but they're only 6 pounds lighter each. Significant but not worth the sacrificed toughness in my case.
