Anyone painted a 2020 OR grill black?

My color scheme is Cement/Black, which leads me to wonder how the 2020 grill would look painted black. Before doing so figure I'll pose the question - Anyone done it?

When I first saw the 2020's it was swwet to see the dark grille surround and what looked to be a black grille. When I finally saw ine in person and notice the grille was a graphite color, who makes these types of decisions? Most of the items on the outside of the truck ar black if they are not painted. Why not just go black?

I think it would look good, but I have not seen one done yet.

Agreed. I love the graphite color in general (the wheels on my 4Runner and s2000 are almost exactly that color), but it doesn't really match the rest of the truck... at least the Cement/Black scheme I'm going for. I may be swapping my headlights sometime soon so will consider painting it then.

I'm not a "matchy matchy" type person, but some of the color choices on Tacoma's are just weird. My 2017 SR5 had 4 different shades of grey in the interior. ???
Somehow I picture the guy in charge of the color palette as someone who shows up to work everyday in a blue suit with brown shoes and a green tie.

Black would probably look good however my concern would be how well paint will adhere to the grill with bugs/rocks/debris constantly hitting it.
Might be better to replace it with a black grill as opposed to painting.

Good point, but I haven painted both the grill surround and front bumper on my 98 4Runner, and haven't run into a ton of chipping issues. I'd likely use Satin black so it'd be super easy to touch up if needed.

Paint adheres to steel much better than it does to plastic.

I have a 2017 which was chrome but the same design as the 2020 I believe. I plastidipped it black. Kept it like that for a year or so and it held up better than expected before switching to a knock off trd pro grill. Here is what it looked like.

I see no need to change this grille at all.

I just hit my 2018 TRD OR grill with plastidip. I'm no pro and I'll probably re-do it, but it still looks better than the chrome.

Graphite generally has more depth than black. There's few black paints that show depth and shimmer, and it wouldn't be very cost effective to put that type of paint on a $120 plastic piece. Graphite shows metallic flecks much better, as is made obvious in the grilles. I personally think the gunmetal/graphite grilles of the later 3rd gens look absolutely amazing. Now let's talk about my chrome ugly as sin cheese grater 2016 grille, THAT has to change.

I agree with thread poster. I wish it was black rather than the graphite color. I sold my grill :/

You need to scuff it really well with a scotchbrite pad then spray with plastic adhesion promoter first or it will just flake off.

I saw these on IG, the user seems to be selling 2020 style grills in black with the raptor lights. Gives you an idea of the 2020 TRD grill in black. I think it looks good, might paint mine.

Haha! I posted a link to that grille in another thread yesterday and someone told me it was a waste to spend $239 on a slab of plastic with lights that do nothing. I think the TRD pro grill is a bit over done and this is a good looking alternative. I think the SR grille with the black trim not the chrome of the SR5 looks nice too.
