So after returning from a camping trip north of Strawberry, I'm thinking I might want something bigger.. I was thinking of looking into a 1st gen Tundra.
Anyone own one or used to own one?
What are any pros or cons, what to look for or what to stay away from.
Not in a hurry at all, just looking for some information from the "experts"!

Best gen Tundras are pretty nice. All years had lower ball joint issues. Use OEM only, no moog shit.

4.7L is the only way to go. Comes in automatic only. It runs forever. Starter is under the intake so big bucks to change.

    03 plus has refreshed grille.

I think 03 or 04 added the 5speed auto. Worth it if you care about gas mileage.

04 double cab added. Same motor so it feels slow.

    05-06 had a power bump

Elocker was never offered. LSD rear optional on 02 and added to thr sport package in 03+

Frames get rusty. Starts at spare tire crossmember

Driveline is pretty much the same as a first gen taco, but wider.

    Fake news.
Every one says tundra is the same as 2nd gen, not even close.
2nd gen taco is closest to a T100. Third gen taco is closet to first gen tundra.

    Width
    1st Gen Tacoma : 70.3″
    1st Gen T100 : 75.2"
    2nd Gen Tacoma : 74.7"
    3rd Gen Tacoma : 75.2
    "
    1st Gen Tundra : 79.3"

    Length
    1st Gen Tacoma AC/DC : 202.9″
    1st Gen T100 RCLB/AC : 209.1"
    2nd Gen Tacoma AC/DCSB : 208.1"

    3rd Gen Tacoma AC/DCSB : 212.3"
    1st Gen Tundra : 218.3 to 230.1″

    Curb Weight
    1st Gen Tacoma : 2,750 to 3,705 lbs
    1st gen T100 : 3,320 to 4,040 lbs
    2nd Gen Tacoma : 3,550 to 4,220 lbs

    3rd Gen Tacoma : 3,980 to 4,480 lbs
    1st Gen Tundra : 3,935 to 5,020 lbs

And how do you know the other trucks widths weren't taken with the flares on? Boom

So you can't tell me if the width numbers for the T100 and Tacomas are with or without flares, but you can for the first gen Tundra. So you haven't actually proven much yet, is what I'm saying. Just bent the numbers to your favor a little.

My access cab limited has big flares.

    20180908_141122.jpg

Some Tacomas have flares, some don't. Same with Tundras. So the.range of the width spec must be from non flare to "big" flare. But the Tacoma numbers don't tell you the non flare.and flare. Just one number, but which is it?

I've owned two double cabs now and love them. I've driven in a couple 2nd Gen Tacos and the Tundra has better interior space and headroom (I'm 6'1" so important). The V8 is really nice to have a bullet proof motor. Mileage sucks, but that is to be expected. Power is there and I had my old one on 285/75/17's and while there was a power loss, I never felt like I had to regear as many 1st and 2nd gen tacoma guys feel.

As stated, try to get an 05-06 as you get an extra 40 hp and 5 speed auto trans. The DC are long and not the greatest turning radius, so tight trails aren't the best for it, but the ride is comfy and smooth. Definitely feel like they are built to last and solid unlike the 99 4runner I have. Overall it has been my favorite vehicle I have owned and recommend to everyone. If you have any more specific questions let me know.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    :bucket:

    I don't have any flares.

+295k miles. Timing belt changed once around 150k ish. Probably needs changed again. Still purrs like a kitten. Still takes off when you need it too. I change the Mobil 1 oil once a year (add as needed).

Leaf springs suck. I added a 3 leaf Wheelers pack for 1.5" lift in the rear and 2.5" billies up front. You can fit 255 85 16's on the at lift with no issues.

Can verify the Ball joint comment...I'm on my 3rd set of Moogs and they need replaced. :crapstorm:

It also likes to pull the rear shock washers through the mounting holes. I've since remedied that.

Change the radiator once due to it leaking at the top seal.

I have a 2nd gen Tacoma and a 2014 F-150. My brother has a 2006 1st gen Tundra. In the real world there isn't enough difference in size, fuel economy, payload, or towing capacity to bother with between that Tundra and a 2nd gen Tacoma. The difference between my Tacoma and F-150 or current Tundra is significant.

That said the original Tundra's were very good trucks. The biggest downside is that the older Tundra's use a timing belt that needs to be replaced every 100K and it isn't a cheap job. My brother will soon be replacing his for the 2nd time.

For me it was pricing. A 2nd gen with 150K was still 18k+ around me, but a Tundra with same mileage was 10-12k. Only thing that sucks is the aftermarket support is non-existent for Tundras.
