So I found this link https://www.stevensonhendricktoyota.com/posts/blog-Toyota-Navigation-app on how to install a Toyota Entune app and wondering if this is just a factory upgrade to the Entune system already installed or is it something different? Will it work on any gen Tacoma?

It looks like adding this will get me something more than I get from the factory version. I've already updated to the latest software through this rather long TW thread:

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Hmmm..they really don't want to tell you what it is do they? And I wonder why the limited number of years, I'd be surprised if it doesn't work on all 3rd gens. Any brave souls want to install it and report back?

    1...2...3...NOT IT!!

I had the scout GPS on my factory radio, it was awful. Basically used your phone like carplay would for maps, but a worse version. I got rid of the radio and went with one that was carplay compatible

I tried it too. I use google map. Or Waze. It talks to you and pretty good. Advantage of Waze is it takes into account for traffic conditions.

Scout GPS sucks. You connect your phone to your vehicle and then the Scout GPS app sends the navigation instructions to you through your cars radio. It will show you when to turn but it will not provide a map view (as in a typical GPS view).

It also never updated for traffic for me.

When I hit the "MAP" button on the head unit, I get a message that "The navigation app is not installed".

Am I understanding correctly that my new 22 Tacoma doesn't have a built in navigation application? If so, how do I get SOMETHING... while I am waiting on an Android Auto-compatible cable to arrive?

or what if I don't happen to have a phone?

My 2021 has dynamic navigation (cloud-based maps and traffic built into the head unit) because I specifically looked for a truck with the premium audio (non-JBL) package in order to get it. The "standard" nav on these trucks is via CarPlay or Android Auto unless you get the premium package or a premium audio package. Someone I'm sure will correct me if I missed a way to get built-in nav.

I don't know of any way to get nav unless it's built into the head unit or you have a phone.
