This might be better suited for a different thread, but I couldn't find anything regarding fitness, or even a 40+ thread for us "old" men.
I'm 41 and have never really worked out before, but I would like to start because I'm tired of looking like a scrawny old dude.
I feel like bodyweight only exercises would be much better for me because there is a much lower chance of injuring myself.

I've search the internet for a while, but I get really confused because I feel like most of the body weight videos out there, are made by people who also do weightlifting. I know there are also body weight forums, but it's a bit of information overload.

Anyone here have a good routine they can recommend, or point me in the right direction of a forum?

As a new poster here, I know I’m going to get laughed out of the room, but I use my wife’s Peloton account and their bodyweight workouts are challenging and work a wide variety of practical muscle groups. I might recommend a free trial and making notes on the routines, cancel the subscriptions and continue doing the workouts.

It's miserably hot in Burbank right now, I'm guessing, but for cardio, a few mile bike ride every other day does wonders. And you'll get those thicc calves

I do a variety of indoor exercises with resistance bands for strength/flexibility. I don't have a set routine, but the internet has a million different plans for body weight/resistance band strength training.

I actually ride my bike every single day, slow pace, but probably 6 miles or so. And it's definitely been absolutely disgusting the last few days. That's part of my problem, is the amount of information out there, I just need something built for dummies.

I'm a dummy and sort of built my own plan. Knowing myself, I've probably been doing it wrong forever lol

Crunches, burpees, pushups, squats in no particular order or rhythm. Somebody here will hopefully set you (and hopefully me) straight on what to actually do.

That's kinda neat. It looks like you could build that in a weekend from home depot for about $100 if someone was so inclined.

I hate how all the fitness ads/equipment are fit, young, attractive people. I wanna see some dude in his 40's with a beer gut struggling to hang onto an overhead bar lol

OP you have to be just as careful with body weight exercises as with weight training exercises. For example dips can lead to shoulder injuries as can pushups. It’s not about what you’re doing it’s about how you’re doing it as well as the volume relative to your ability. I’m 38 and have been working out consistently since high school. My advice would be to do a bit of both. You should definitely start weight training, do not wait, just start lifting light and do not be insecure about it. Way to many people allow insecurity to take over and they sacrifice proper form and full range of motion for stacking the weight on or going for a dumbbell that they have no business trying to curl. Take baby steps and you can not go wrong. One of the primary reasons you should start lifting weights is to promote bone density, at our age especially, bones begin to weaken over time without weight resistant training. There is no ideal workout, only what is ideal for you. When lifting weights I would start with free weights, benching and curling with lightweight dumbbells at least until your stabilizer muscles become accustomed to their new routine, also, the range of motion you will get with dumbbells will surely make your shoulders and other key pivot points happy, as you can manipulate the weight to what feels right for you. Find a program that works for you, stick to it for 3 to 6 months(before switching it up, making micro adjustments as needed) and be patient, the results will come, I guarantee it. Best of luck and hit us up on the workout thread to let us know how you’re doing, and ask questions, no stupid questions about fitness, we all started out not knowing proper squat form from our arsholes:thumbsup:

Man, I'm a dummy and I always forget to put pertinent information in my posts. I actually own one of these things, called a power tower, mine is ancient as hell and actually looks kind of like this contraption.

Just out of curiosity, should I be worried about my bowl of salsa resting on my chest on the recliner while I eat chips?

As long as you keep your chest flexed you should be good to go:pccoffee:

There’s a lot of good calisthenic workouts you can do but a routine for me likely won’t be a good one for you. I’d bet someone recommending me a routine won’t be a good fit either just because everyone is at different levels.

look up calisthenics for beginners on YouTube and you’ll get a lot of good workouts. Don’t limit yourself to body weight stuff though since there’s a lot you can do with just a few dumbbells.

Here’s some workout routines I do with dumbbells:
    https://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/dumbbell-only-upper-lower-workout-routine

Doing this for a couple weeks and supplement with some abs, you’ll see a pretty big difference in how you feel.

Whatever you do, start light and work your way into it. Otherwise you’ll have a good chance of injuring yourself. Try a decent protein/recovery drink as well.

I’ve been working out for a while but have let myself go since having kids. I’m recently getting back into it. One thing I have to remind myself is that I didn’t turn into a blob of fat overnight and I’m not gonna get rid of it overnight. Also, document your workouts. You may not see/feel a difference this week vs next week but documentation doesn’t lie. If you see on paper that you can deadlift more or run faster, the motivation to push yourself more will be there.

I was curious about the protein thing too, since I definitely don't eat enough right now. I most likely going to have to supplement it with a shake like you said.

Homey nailed it, start at least mixing in some weight training to ward off sarcopenia (muscle loss with age) and bone density loss due to the same. If you’re looking for valuable resources, check out barbellmedicine.com. Two MD’s that are very into barbell training, and lots of heavily researched, vetted info.

Body weight, do squats. Calf raises. Pull ups. Push ups. Whatever ab exercise floats your boat. The most important part of any routine is that it's something you can stick to. Once you get going you can change it up to fit you
