I am considering putting purple led turn signals and purple fog lights on my tacoma. From what I have read so far it is extremely unclear if this is allowed. If anyone actually knows the rules I would really appreciate the feedback.

It's illegal, DOT pretty much wants only clear and amber on the front, red, amber and clear on the rear. Any other colors means tickets.

Most guys who run various colors use controllers and limit the usage to friday nights or shows etc.

You could talk to the local DMV or the LEO in the area.

Otherwise, the colors are defined in FMVSS. Very few exceptions..............

Yeah, basically if it's the color that's ok the vehicle, that's what is legal. The rear turn signals can also be amber but that's about the only difference.

I think the concern is people running colors or blinking lights that resemble emergency vehicles. I've seen more and more people running random colors for fogs or under body lights in Hawaii lately and it doesn't seem like police are taking much issue to it.

My guess is running colors and lights designated for functional driving with anything other than stock colors is illegal. I remember when Hawaii police were ticketing those with LED head lights, mainly aftermarket ones, but even cars that came from the factory with them (unjustifiably). If you want to know, ask the police department what they would do. Or run it and see. Although they may decide to tack it on as an additional violation should you get pulled over for a violation of greater concern.
