Some context matters. Recently moved across country. Did 12 hour driving days for 3 days. Was filling up my 2.7 one night probably 9 hours in, stopped at a gas station in the middle of nowhere Texas. Pretty tired. I filled the whole truck up with e85 and moved along. This was cause they didn’t have e87.. I just knew I wasn’t putting in diesel. Granted I was at a quarter tank or more of e87 and filled up again with e87 at a quarter tank + next fill up. My dumbass also didn’t know this was considered “flex fuel”/high ethanol up until now, 3 weeks later, probably 10 tanks of gas later. To be honest I never really saw it in NJ, but then again I never had to fill my own gas lol

Haven’t noticed anything off. No CEL or issues. I seem to burn gas quicker but that might just be the elevation change/more frequent use of 4th gear. Lots of stop and go (these Vegas folks don’t know how to drive).

Give it to me straight, did I compromise anything in the truck running a tank of e85? Part out? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the matter or experiences.

EDIT: I didn’t fill with e85. It was 86 octane and I’m still a dumbass who probably saw e85 at another pump and the New Jerseyan in me was confused

    E85 or 85 octane?
    There is a big difference.

If it was E85, jut don’t do that again.
Surprised you didn’t get a code of some sort.
But anyways, if nothing has happened yet. It probably won’t.

Definitely e85. I remember the oddity of seeing it. I still might not know 100% what I am talking about so forgive me.

Lots of ethanol in my areas (frequent travel Iowa to Michigan).

You sure it wasn’t octane 85? E85 would probably still run, but interested to see what people say ha.

Interesting. Someone smarter than us will chime in and explain the differences and what may happen

    I edited my post above.
But anyways, just don’t do it again.
If you have not had any problems yet, you probably won’t.

Well now I’m second guessing myself. Might’ve been 85 octane. I googled some images of the different pumps e85 vs 85. To be quite honest I thought they were one in the same

    E85 is 85% ethanol
Most pump gas it E10. And Toyota says no more than E10 (10% ethanol) should be used.

Given it mixed with a 1/4 tank of regular, they got away with it for the time being. Nonetheless, not a risk I would be willing try for the hell of it.

    Me either.

I think. Colorado and a few other states sell 85 octane.
I never seen E87, so that why I asked if it was E85 or 85 octane.
Here in Tennessee, the E85 pump handle is a different color. Yellow I think?

Played detective a bit. I went into my bank account and checked where in podunk Texas it was that I filled up before arriving in Amarillo. Apparently that gas station does not sell e85, or 85 for that matter. I put 86 octane in my truck most likely. I guess I am still delusional from the long drive :D

    I wouldn’t worry about it.
You’d know by now if there was a problem.

No worries here, although I was curious the possible implications of consistently running tanks of e85. Not that I have I suppose. I saw a few members commenting they have here though, on other threads

I don’t know if the fuel system is up for it. Ethanol is hard on plastics and rubbers.

    You’d definitely need a tune.

And maintenance would go up with more frequent oil changes. As almost all flex fuel vehicles have different OCI if running E85.

Gotcha. The only reason I bring all this up is because I’m considering getting a Ford van with the 5.4 that can run flex fuel. Which is e85, which then had me thinking “Is this the shit I put in my truck?” Lol

I’ve been there. But under different circumstances.
I run 100% gasoline 93 octane in my saws and trimmers.
The E85 pump is right next to it. I might of had a moment of panic myself.
Halfway down the road I couldn’t remember exactly what pump I used.
It was one of those days, too much going on and try to get as much done as possible.

I did remember how much I paid, so I called the station and asked what the price each was.
I bought 2 gallons (like I always do) and the price I paid was for 100% 93. Catastrophe diverted.

Constantly in the same boat. Hence why I checked my bank account and googled images of this place to be sure. I must’ve seen an e85 option at a pump somewhere along the way on this trip. But I don’t think my truck would run noticeably the same on a tank of it.

My confusion must’ve came from seeing 86 octane for the first time and filling up on that.

The mountain states with higher elevation sell 85 octane. E85 should be visibly different than 85 octane. I hate the stations that have E85, flex fuel, diesel, normal gas all at the same pump (like Sheetz).

And for the record, this is how NJ is failing the country, by not allowing its citizens to pump gas

Truth, my girlfriend can’t pump her own gas. She said she had to once and almost had a mental breakdown lol. I frequently started visiting other states once I got my license, and have been filling up gas cans for ATVs and small engines since a young lad so that knowledge has always been there.

Hell a week before I left NJ I had to go to a wedding in Jersey city. The attendant must’ve been taking a late night dump or something cause he didn’t come out till I was done pumping it myself haha
