That's how it should be, and fortunately it's becoming more common nowadays. I've never cared about the other stuff with people I work with, long as they can do the job and give a shit. My wife has forgotten more about working on houses than I could ever learn, and if it wasn't for her knowledge as well as doing stuff (when she can) we'd never have been able to take on the fixer upper we live in.

I've always seen it as helping the team means the team is better off for it...long ago a new person on my team used to stay late unpaid just to pick my brain and learn. I was always happy to do it too.

Great grammy knew her stuff..love it

Definitely is. And managers have managers too. I've always tried to manage as the "good guy" type, do your work and be honest with me, and there are no issues. When people lie, that's very tough to get past.

Can relate. We don't have children, but my wife is in a point of getting her BCBA (autism) certification. I'm not really able to explore other opportunities externally as I provide the insurance and such, she's doing a somewhat paid internship (which is needed to take the cert exam). But I will do it because she's worked hard all her life even before I came along.

I've seen a couple people comment "work isn't supposed to be fun" and I get that to a degree. It sure would be nice to have something that was interesting and rewarding though!
Part of my problem is I still don't know what I want to do. I went to school for mechanical engineering, but only stayed one year. I'm more hands on than what that seemed to be. I really didn't feel like I was learning anything either. There are things I'm good at, and like, but haven't figured out a realistic way to turn that into something that pays the bills.
The people you work with can make or break a job too. If you're lucky enough to have good people around it can make a crappy job not so bad. The reverse is also true. I feel like I should have a degree in psychology after all the crazy people I've worked with.

I am really glad you guys are talking about this "old man becomes electrician" thing because I'm early 40's and in career crisis mode, and it's something I have wondered about...but have been too embarrassed to ask here since I don't personally know any. The appeal of being able to go independent, and the availability of work pretty much anywhere is a huge appeal to me (my feet get itchy..). I'm not quite "can't wire an outlet" green; but it wasn't too long ago I conquered my first one..

It's funny how your perception of age changes. When you're early 50's, early 40's sounds young to me now. I remember turning 30 and thinking how old I was, and all the good days were over. The days go slow, but the years go fast.

Grandad often warned me that time speeds up as you age, and 80 creeps up on you much faster than you'd think.

That's the one thing I took to heart. Enjoy the now and seize the day. Because what's available today will not be on the menu for tomorrow.

You’re only 33. We all have made bad decisions. I’ve made plenty. Do I hate my job? Not really. I hate the stupid ass customers!!! You still have lots of years to work. Go find some that will bring you joy. You don’t have to love your job just like it enough that you’re miserable in the morning. Being that unhappy is not worth it. Every day I’m ready to walk away if I become miserable.
I came to the realization that there are good jobs everywhere. You just need to look for it. Go to trade school. Talk to people. See what’s out there. You might have to take a step backwards but then it’s two steps forward. Best of luck op.

And yes the group of 30-40 year old new hire are lazy as f#%@!!!!! And very sensitive!!! But the management lets them be lazy and then complain to the senior personnel that we need to step it up. I don’t know what the answer but we need to find it.

Depends, my wife is in human services and loves her work..even when the people she works with (the other employees that is) are a pain in the ass.

Though yes, I've had jobs that weren't great per se but the people were a plus.

Totally. My friend always says "remember when 30 was old"?

Hopefully we all get to live like my grandpa to be 94, and was very self sufficient until age 93.

That's just it. Management is ultimately to blame if the stuff is tolerated.

It hit me really, really hard in the last year or two that I spent years in a job I really liked, not going after what I *really really really* wanted to do. Now I am too old for that - and not just perception, if I dropped everything and started training right now, I’d probably have 2-3 years of actual work (after some number of years of dues paying) before mandatory retirement at 55. They say it’s never too late…but it’s statistically unlikely they’re right about everything…

Everyone is different. Interesting and rewarding is what I do with the money I make from my job. My job is just what I do to pay the bills and enjoy living, not who I am. Coworkers are just that. They aren't friends or family. I might enjoy working with them, but outside of work they don't matter. Work is just work. Finish your degree. Get a better job. Enjoy life.

How I feel about my job would need to improve to make up to the level of hate. I have to hold on for 20 more months for it to be over. Ever since our company bought another one and took on their executives and started to use their programs everything went in the shitter

When I think back on the many jobs I had the recurring criticism in my work reviews was that I had an attitude problem. My response to one boss was "What attitude, Shithead"
Obviously, I didn't play well with others.

Working in a darkroom, I was required to put a tick mark on a clipboard for every finished piece of art or type ready for the paste-up person to assemble on a page for the printing press.

When I estimated how much I could earn on my own charging $1 each, a light bulb went off in my head. I eventually got my own equipment & started my own business. This led to buying a storefront and apt. and a weekend cottage.

After 10 years I sold the business to a large competitor. I don't regret anything. Except my contempt for previous bosses.

The problem...as I see it, the wrong people are in position of leadership/power.

A good story resulted as of your actions to improve your position.

It made you evaluate/pursue a plan/put into motion the wheels of success...you basically got yourself out of a rut/bad situation.

    That's what I'm talkin' bout!

One can stay in their own private state or take action to improve their situation.

It really is challenging to "take that leap of faith" without knowing what the result will be.

I would say, "thinking positive" helped make the decision but it's more than that.

We can call it whatever we want but the end result brings lots of joy!

Thank you for contributing to this thread with your testimony.
