Although I know they do not recommend it, are there any users on here who have religiously used 5w30 with no ill affects? More so on the lines of a truck that has substantial mileage with the different oil weight.

    Purely out of curiosity.

nope, it would be silly to go with a weight not recommended by the toyota engineers. If something 'were' to happen, they could realistically test the oil and you'd be SOL

Yea, and I get that. I don't plan on deviating from manufacturer recommendation. But..... I know many like to go against recommendations. Like I said, just curious on how its worked out for any.

It would be interesting to find out why the change. My 2nd gen 4.0L calls for 5/30.

I would sacrifice a few MPG for better engine protection. But it does seem to be the case that 0w20 does the job well. No issues with these trucks regarding the water thin oil being used in them.

Different engine...but I"m guessing most likely for fuel efficiency

I seem to remember somebody stating the 2GR-FKS motor is spec'd to recieve 5W-30 for vehicles overseas. Maybe do a search to see if you can find thread where the guy posted a link to the info.

0W-20 is spec'd to help with gas mileage. Hence the "advanced fuel economy" advertisement on Mobil 1's 0W-20 bottles

Well yea, I get that it isn't spec'ed for it, hence their recommendation. And My guess is as good as yours that the thinner oil weight is used to meet higher demand for better fuel economy. But similar how the majority of us use a slightly different weight for our differentials, I would imagine a slightly thicker engine oil would operate fine.

And to get this thread ready for Friday, here are some links to the Toyota Kluger owners manual (Kluger = Highlander in Australian) spec'ing the use of 0W20, 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 for the 2GR-FKS motor.

    https://toyotamanuals.com.au/document/landing_page/kluger-owners-manual-oct-17-current

For warranty purposes, I'll use the oil that my truck's owners manual tells me to use, but I am curious to hear people's thoughts on this.

Thats what I am thinking. I wouldn't want to fudge with the warranty.

Yeah I think so haha. It is interesting to note that the Toyota Kluger's manual states not to run 10W-30 in extremely low temps as it may be hard to start the motor. Seems to be ok with 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5W-30 in Australian 2GR's under most conditions.

So since this thread, has anyone switched away from the 0w20 to an Australian weight? If so, how's it been going?

I have been running a mixture of 0-20 and 5-30 to major it around 2.5-25. Truck runs smoother in the high 110 plus degree weather here in Las Vegas summers. In the winter I may go back to 0-20, but summer seems far too hot to run oil as thin as water

Someone designs a car/truck (by someone I mean multiple engineers) Says it needs *name weight of oil here*
We say, “nah” I know more. I work at McDonald’s. Changes oil weight. Gets pissed and complains to Tacoma world because warranty is denied.

    yup….I’ve seen this movie before

^^^ I think the main reason people start to wonder (especially with the 2.7L that originally spec'd a different grade) is because the owner's manual in other countries recommends all kinds of things, up to 20W-50 for the 2.7L in Australia. That makes people wonder if they are trading wear for fuel consumption for CAFE purposes.

The Australian manual for the Highlander/Kluger says that it comes from the factory with 0W-20 but that anything up to 10W-30 can be used.

Is the non-us 2gr-fks completely different than the US 2gr-fks?
