anybody use a rear window deflector

I'm looking to add a slim shade over the rear slider to help deflect rain water from the rear slider. with the shell on, after a rain, the droplets are on 3 rear windows- the cab slider, the shell flip down window and the shell rear hatch door.

i guess AVS stopped making this for the 2nd tacoma, but wondering if anyone has used it.

I think i might just buy the f150 one, cut out some sections to fit.... it's more functional than need to look pretty

 

How bout a pool noodle? You could wrap in some type of material so it’s doesn’t mart the paint and stuff it between cab and cap right at the top.

 

I have seen people use the pool noodle for sealing the bed cap and cab together through the sliding windows. Some sort of rain deflector is a good idea though, I'm gonna follow this thread for more peoples ideas lol I also hate trying to see through 3 sets of glass with water on them all.

otherwise there’s various products for sealing In between whether it be an accordion boot, bike inner tube, etc

the challenge is adhesion and paint rub abrasion

 

Jon_elc, if you come up with a good solution, please message me. I drive with my sliding window open all the time for my dog. Even when its raining, and this would have helped cut down the amount of rain coming in.

 

I found this on Amazon. It's inflatable. I'm sure there's more out there to choose from, this was the first one I saw.

i had a 1992 mazda with a plate glass rear window. when i got a new Leer shell, at the time, they put in a sliding glass
window that had a metal lip around it, where they attached this accordion rubber boot. the front of the shell (where we have these new-fangled drop down slider) was solid fibrglass.

The kid installing it cut a hole there with a sawzall , approximately the same dimensions as the metal
lip on the truck slider frame and when they put the shell in place, they fit the rubber accordion to the shell. (it had a channel in it that fit on the fiberglass.

That was the shit. No paint rubbing,
no water going on the glass. only 2 layers of glass to see through. easily wipe
both side of the slidjng glass window.

i am not interested in a donut or pool noodle to seal the top, more like a plastic lip or 'rain gutter' to deflect rain water away from the glass.

i may just tape some plastic strips in /\ above the center slider glass pieces so that any rain water will be deflected and drip essentially down right where the 3 glass panels meet (on both sides of the center sliding section....

for now, i applied Rain-X to both sliders

 

I'd be a little concerned about putting any type of hard materail between the cab and cap. Both pieces of the truck move independantly, and could cause rubbing/scratches if it touchs the adjacent part of the truck.

 

Back in 1990 and then again in 1993, I also had Mazda pick ups with that same set up. It was really awesome as were no water leaks or anything. Nothing rubbed the paint on the shell or the cab. It was a rubber accordion type boot that flexed with the cab and the bed. On the 1990 had a Brahma shell, the 1993 had a snug top. Strip was if I remember right was about 4 inches wide and there was a lip formed that tucked into the metal channel on the aftermarket sliding window, and the camper shell.

 

you guys are going to die. this os just a prototype of what I'm envisioning. it won't rub the glass of the shell at all - its just a cut straw and if i mirror it, i think the water will drip down on the frame, not the glass

thanks @OffroadToy i got some similar "rv adhesive raingutter" and i was only able to do the center before i ran out of time. i cut the 2 pieces to put a peak in the center and slight angles down on the sides.

 

i added side pieces... we're expecting rain later today, so we'll see how it works!

 

So go figure: putting the rain gutter on the cab window only prevents rainwater on the cab window

 

i put a strip on each "side" window
of the cab slider and 1 piece like an arch on the frame above the slider.

these rain gutter strips don't impede the amount of vision through the rear-view
mirror at all. the limiting border of vision is actually the opening of the shell rear door.

 

here is my rear view... it's sooooo clear!! almost like there are no windows there at all. hard to see it but the cab slider and shell slider have minimal water, its just beaded up on the shell rear window.

i am so stoked about this!

no, there is about a 1/4" gap front to
back between the seals on the windows.

the center window, on the shell side, i had the to put the raingutter on the frame, above the window (and highter than the seal on the cab) because if i put it
on the glass, it wouldn't slide open.
