Right at the 5k mark it was rock to the windshield time! I called 4 places for replacement cost and got 4 different stories. I have the TRD Sport long box. I didn’t realize it till 2 weeks ago it (and all Toyota’s apparently) have LDA. Some of the places say they have to recalibrate the LDA or else it will throw codes. Some places said the windshield Can be replaced without disconnecting the LDA. Some say just replace the windshield and don’t recalibrate.

Personally, I could care less about using LDA but I don’t want a non calibrated replacement unit to cause issues. The cost ranged from 365 bucks to 750 bucks! The 750 quote was from a big chain shop that has the calibration equipment in the shop. The others said see a 3rd party place to get it recalibrated. Right down to. Forget about it!

    Any input would be great!

I have zero experience, but I've read if the sensor is not unplugged, it does not need recalibrated. It'll probably take another few months or a year, but these will be so common, the shops will be forced to sink or swim.

Well I guess that’s input! I am hoping to hear from people that have had the procedure done. Not calibrated, not unplugged. I didn’t pick the insurance option so that’s out the window. For now.

When my shit got hailed on last year the windshield needed replaced also. It was covered with the rest of the hail damage but the glass guy that my body shop had do it told me these windshields are about $1k for oem glass. And at that point I'd owned the truck for 4 months so damn right I want OEM glass.

I have lots of experience and it is true if you have lane departure and the cruise control assist. I called several places the first go round. The places all said it could not be mobile and I had to come to the shop for calibration. Since I have a lift and oversized tires they could not guarantee the calibration. So fat it seems to work just fine.

Shops here ( doesn’t have to be a dealer) can calibrate LDA if they have the equipment. Funny how the 2 big glass shops who have the calibration equipment say it HAS to be done. And a few say if it’s not disconnected, it does not have to be recalibrated. It’s 180 bucks a year for glass coverage. Here. Expensive for a 10 year old vehicle with no LDA and a 200 buck all in windshield. Cheap insurance if it’s 750 to change a LDA windshield. My insurance guy is on deck for future coverage but for now I’m still trying to get the real facts as to what HAS to be done

I doubt the 2020 TRD Sport has cruise control assist. I wouldn’t use anY mobile glass service ever. Once again, I could care less about having LDA working. I’d prefer If I could just disable it. I just don’t want any error codes if I don’t get it calibrated. The hunt continues!

Ive had my truck for 4 1/2 weeks! I’ve owned many new vehicles over the last 30 years and never gone to the dealer for OEM glass. I’ve always had good luck with good reputable auto glass shops

There you go! Learn something new. I travel many times a months for 3 to 7 hrs a day on the highway. Never ever use cruise. Maybe once in the last 25 years. So if not recalibrating causes me to lose adaptive cruise. So be it.

I got a rock chip in the windshield at 2k if that makes you feel any better. It drives me nuts, but I think I am going to try a repair before replace. Is yours not reparable?

No. It’s probably 1.5” in diameter. Lower left of the mirror. Annoying to look at but out of my field of view. Till it started shooting cracks everywhere! Never added it to my insurance as previous windshields were way cheaper. I’ve got it set up for after I get this one swapped out.

Not an option everywhere. It’s not an option in IL or NJ but when I was stationed in AZ ya only $3 a month extra.

Here's the deal. The sensor likely doesn't HAVE to be unplugged and calibrated when the glass is replaced; however, a big business like Safelite is not going to assume any liability by deviating from the standard procedure. They would much rather avoid a potential lawsuit than hook you up.

Mine was replaced with Pilkington glass (OEM equivalent) for $450ish, and recalibration was $125 ish. If you're not prepared for that, get glass insurance.

^ This and what everyone else has said, I've had to replace one on my 17 and 19. The glass itself even without TSS isn't cheap, at least from my experience, ranging from $450-800 depending on if you go OEM or non. If the installer disconnects the sensor it will need recalibrated at $120-150. If they don't disconnect it no need to recalibrate. The issue is no Toyota dealer or big company like Safelite will agree to not disonnect it as I found out last year for liability reasons, I did find a local small shop who agreed not which would be an option if you can find one.

Everyone keeps mentioning glass insurance like its a standard option everywhere, it is not, so stop beating OP up for not having it. Trust me if USAA offered it in IL I would have had it after a semi hurled a ice rock at me last Jan.

Thank you! As I have mentioned numerous times, glass insurance was never a thought as here in Canada it’s about 200 bucks extra a year. A Chevy 1/2 ton windshield up to 2008 was you guessed it 200 bucks installed. ONLY after I got my crater On my 2020 Tacoma 2 days ago then called a glass company did I realize that they are so expensive. AFTER I get my windshield replaced out of pocket , I will buck up the 180 bucks moving forward. I’m just trying to find the cheaper way to get past this one time payment of 400 to 750 bucks.

I just went through a windshield replacement on the 4runner last week. OEM replacement with calibration, labor, and taxes through Safelite = $1,209 total o_O I had to pay the $500 deductible and insurance covered the rest. That is ridiculous. Just glad insurance was able to approve the OEM glass considering the ridiculous prices.

My last windshield replacement was probably 15 or so years back and was under $300. How times change.

Completely different vehicle but I have to assume the Taco is in the ballpark.

I have replaced two windshields on my 20 Sport. Cost was around $300 each time and no calibration was needed. Rock quarry trucks are brutal on windshields in the Texas hill country.
