I made a thread awhile back talking about the engine noise on these 4th gen’s. I’ve had some people say it’s normal and others saying not so much. Just wanted to check out if anyone has any updates or if their truck is still doing the same thing. I turned off the engine sound enhancement which made a difference to me however this sound is still present from 0 to 40 and roughly 1st through 4th and after that 4th gear or certain mph range it’s quiet. It’s concerned me so much that I’ve had it to multiple dealerships and they say it’s normal. I had a 3rd gen and I know all about the direct injection sound but this honestly sounds different to me then what my 3rd gen sounded like. I’ve read that the hood insulator does help some. Maybe someone has gotten a for sure answer as to what this rattle almost like a pre detonation sound is. It perhaps very well might be the direct injection but it sounds nothing like my 3rd gen v6.

It's not the turbo you're hearing spool up, is it? What type of noise is it? I haven't noticed any unusual noises in mine. Although, I went from a 2008 with 400,000 miles to the '24, so it's silent compared to the old girl.

How to turn off fake engine noise?

EDIT : CARISTA. Thx for the tip. Still considering this just for the seat belt chime. I would love to see a full list of changes that the dealer can make to see how Carista compares.

I would like to be able to lock the doors with the key outside of the vehicle so I can leave it running while I run a quick errand. I can remote start it with doors locked after all.

Funny, I thought that was a Ford only feature.

They are noisy engines, my wife’s 2022 corollla cross with d4s and the M20a-fks makes the same sounds as my 4th gen Tacoma.

That's the hood flutter, when Toyota benchmarks other manufactures they go all in.

Funny thing about the hood insulator, it might be enough weight to reduce or eliminate the flutter.

I've got the hood sound dampening (it's not insulation) and have not noticed any flutter.

Mine is loud as hell and this new engine has the same exact D4S system. People have told me it's clacking like crazy and that it's not normal, but I've stopped worrying about it. It doesn't bother me anymore.

Of course, it does. Different engine. I'd be worried if it didn't.

I believe they did away with the self cleaning injector mode

Same here. I haven't tried it yet, but isn't there a metal key with the card key? Could you lock the doors with that while it's running?

I think it's still there, but quieter. The DI chatters at startup, then stops. During driving, I hear it kick in and off while stopped in traffic. I'm sure it's doing this during driving, but I don't hear it above the engine noise normally.

Can't speak to OP, but there's a very distinct chatter between about 2000-3000 RPM in ECO mode while applying moderate throttle (guessing but let's say 50-75%). On the one hand it's gotten quieter over the first 1000 miles, so perhaps kind of normal? This is distinct from the turbo. It sounds like some sort of resonant shaking of something loose under the hood. But I can't find anything loose. Like others, I notice the hood flopping like a bowl of jello.

Engine seems a bit new to really say what's "normal" with it. The older models that came with this engine were Lexus, so they have a much higher degree of sound proofing than the Tacoma. This is on the TRD OR so no underhood insulation on it.

I've noticed that mine is quiter now than when I first got it. Seems like the MPG's improved with a little mileage too. No hood insulation, I was curious about wanting it at first but now I dont think its something I'd pay $100 to have.

I'd be happier if I could hear more turbo noises though, Its barely noticeable in the Tacoma and my 7.3 powerstroke sounds like a jet taking off at every redlight. I can't wait for the aftermarket to unleash the Tacoma turbo

I must be going deaf, my truck just sounds like a turbo charged engine.

I have that exact chattering sound also and it drives me crazy at times. How ever I notice on a cold start I can take off and unless I get to 3,000 rpm I don’t hear it until the engine warms up. And it’s in the same rpm range and 1st through 4th gear.

4 cylinders can be noisy chatterboxes...some are quieter than others, and some sound like they are going to fall apart any minute.

What engine noise? Like the sound of it running? Did you think you bought an EV?
